Trials Are a Gift From God
Sermon by Mark SchindlerTrials in life, whether they stem from day-to-day struggles or profound losses, are not merely obstacles but gifts from God. These challenges, as exemplified by Major Alexander P. de Seversky, awaken dormant powers and focus energies that might otherwise remain untapped. Just as de Seversky discovered that his physical disability opened new worlds of interest and became a symbol of victory over difficulty, so too must we view our trials as opportunities to see beyond immediate circumstances. His realization that a physical limitation was incidental to the sum of a person's abilities and character reflects a profound truth: our trials, no matter how severe, are incidental when seen as part of God's greater plan for our growth. In the face of affliction, there is a strength to be gained, a strength that keeps us humble and dependent on God for the power to endure. Like de Seversky, who found his incapacity to be a blessing in disguise, we are called to recognize that life remains rich and fruitful despite limitations. Our trials, even those that seem inscrutable or painfully limiting, carry with them a sound obligation to serve others, to help those newly burdened understand the potential for a vibrant life beyond their struggles. By seeing our trials as gifts, we embrace them as symbols of victory, distinctions rather than handicaps, knowing that the power of Christ rests upon us, transforming weakness into strength for His glory.
