Itching Ears

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

In the context of preaching the truth, a grave concern arises when people prioritize their own desires over sound doctrine, leading to the phenomenon of "itching ears." This occurs when individuals reject teachings that do not align with their personal views, seeking only those messages that satisfy their wants. They filter everything through their desires, judging what they hear by their lusts and whims rather than by what is right and good. Their quest is not for objective truth but for self-gratification, wanting to be comforted and to avoid change or repentance. They desire teachers who will affirm them, saying what feels good rather than challenging them with the truth. This pursuit of personal satisfaction drives people to heap up teachers who cater to their preferences, picking and choosing from a variety of messages to suit their moods or needs. Such behavior reflects a lack of loyalty to the pure truth, as they flit from one source to another, seeking what tickles their fancy. As a result, they turn their ears away from the truth and are drawn to fables, myths, and man-made wisdom. This mixing of truth with error poisons the message, leading to unsound teaching that ultimately satisfies their unrighteous desires. God finds this astonishing and horrible, as it produces destruction and death, causing society to crumble through wars, famines, and disasters. When such desires peak, the land itself rejects this immorality, as it goes against the laws established by Him. The true ministers of God, driven by a compulsion to preach the unadulterated gospel, must stand firm against this trend, warning the people as watchmen, even if their success rate is low. They must remain focused on delivering the message of the Kingdom of God, as commanded by Him, without bending to the desires of those with itching ears.

Truth or Unity?

Perspective Matters

Sermonette by Craig Sablich

II Timothy 4:3 warns that a time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions and will turn away from listening to the truth, wandering off into myths. This warning is directed to the church, both in the first century and to congregations today, highlighting the danger of accepting teachings that align with personal desires rather than the truth of God's word. The sobering reality is that when someone is deeply rooted in a system built on inherited perspectives, voices from outside that system rarely carry enough authority to awaken them. Only God's calling can break through this deception. This mystery system is so convincing that, as Jesus warned, if possible, even the elect could be deceived. Therefore, we must continually return to what is written, trusting only the inspired word of God as our source of absolute truth from His perspective. Choosing God's perspective over that of deceptive systems remains a daily life-and-death decision with consequences that come sooner than we think. Many today are convinced that any religious perspective is acceptable, feeling comfortable with various interpretations as long as they mention Jesus. Yet, only God's perspective matters, for His word is the sole lamp that shines a light on His true path. The real question remains simple: will we cling stubbornly to our own perspective, or will we allow God's perspective to correct ours? In the end, only His perspective leads to life.
