Keeping the Truth Pure
Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Charles Whitaker (1944-2021)God requires us to support right doctrine with reasons sourced from His Word, for using wrong reasons contaminates His truth and profanes His Holy Word. Mixing man's reasoning, which is often satan's reasoning, with God's truth ensnares our minds and introduces darkness, as such reasonings lack light and must be shunned. Syncretism, the blending of unholy lies with God's truth, is desecrating and defiles His Word, much like profaning holy time through gainful labor on the Sabbath. Christ exemplified sanctifying God's Word by citing right reasons from His revelation, avoiding contamination with satan's lies. In the example of Job's friends, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar, though occasionally reaching right conclusions, relied on reasoning not based on God's truth, polluting their doctrines with a mixture of truth and lie, thus arousing God's anger. Eliphaz's teachings stemmed from a secretive spirit, promoting hopelessness and a false divide between God and man, denying the possibility of unity or righteousness. Bildad similarly drew from shadowy, ancient sources, advocating a view of man as inherently unworthy and separated from God, contradicting the truth of man being made in God's image with the potential for righteousness. This mixture of truth and error, as seen in persuasive yet deceptive teachings, risks deceiving even the elect if blended with God's holy doctrine. Such syncretism profanes and contaminates His revelation, inviting God's wrath. Unholiness is infectious, and we must avoid mixing the lies of deceptive sources with the truth of the Gospel, remaining complete in Christ.
Truth-Based Worship Vs Spiritual Confusion
Sermon by Martin G. CollinsThe celebration of Christmas often embodies a mixture of truth and error, creating spiritual confusion among those who partake in it. This holiday, steeped in pagan roots with customs like Christmas trees and mistletoe, blends unholy origins with Christian themes, forming a deceptive quagmire of traditions. Such syncretism destroys truth, as a mixture of truths and falsehoods renders the whole a lie, misrepresenting its object and rendering worship unacceptable to God. He does not accept worship that combines pagan and holy elements, as seen in the historical integration of pagan festivals like Saturnalia and Brumalia into what became Christmas during the fourth century under Roman influence. This blending of practices is not new; the Israelites repeatedly mixed idolatrous customs with their worship of God, despite His clear commands against such actions. God warned them not to inquire after the gods of other nations or worship Him in their ways, emphasizing that nothing should be added to or taken away from His commands. Similarly, today, the incorporation of pagan celebrations like Christmas into worship is a direct violation of His will, as it involves trusting in lying words that cannot profit. The spiritual consequences of this mixture are severe, as lies separate us from God, who hates lying and finds it abominable. Scripture reveals that those who engage in such practices are not heard by Him, for He is near only to those who call upon Him in truth. The celebration of Christmas, with its falsehoods and deceptions, turns hearts away from God, promoting works of the flesh such as greed, drunkenness, and revelry, rather than the fruit of the Spirit. True worship must be in spirit and truth, starting with God as the source of light, with no darkness or error mixed in, as any compromise corrupts the purity of devotion to Him.
Prepare to Meet Your God! (Part Five): Religion and Holiness
Article by John W. Ritenbaugh and Richard T. RitenbaughGod's profound disappointment with Israel stems from their spiritual adultery, a mixture of truth and error that defies His holiness. He granted them His calling, promises, Word, and laws to shape them into His sons and daughters, yet they turned to other gods and ways of life, showing no resemblance to Him. This syncretism, blending the lies of the world with His truth, mirrors the false religion Israel practiced during Amos' time, rejecting the true worship of God for a corrupted mix of pagan traditions and divine commands. Such a foul mixture, termed syncretism, provokes God's wrath, as seen when Aaron made a golden calf and proclaimed a feast to the Lord, an act no different from observing modern traditions in the name of Christ. Through human nature, satan constantly seeks to displace God's truth with error, a subtle and gradual loss that can erode even the faithful over generations. Ancient Israel failed to hold fast to the truth given to them, and by Amos' era, they were far removed from the way of life revealed to their fathers. Today, similar religious problems persist in the subtle blending of worldly attitudes, approaches, and ideas with God's truth, which believers must identify and repent of as they grow in grace and knowledge. The church of God, like Israel, risks sliding back into the world when false doctrines are adopted, showing that syncretism remains a present danger. God's church bears the responsibility to guard against drifting from the truth, ensuring that worship and life reflect His holiness without the taint of worldly error.
The Rise of AI
Sermonette by Ryan McClureIn the end times, as warned by Jesus Christ in Matthew 24, deception will permeate the atmosphere, with false prophets and signs and wonders abounding. Christ urges vigilance, emphasizing not to believe in such deceits, for many will come in His name claiming to be the Christ and will deceive many. Even the elect might be at risk of being misled by these powerful deceptions. The struggle between truth and lies is a fundamental challenge in these times. Truth is associated with God, who cannot lie, as stated in Numbers 23:19, for He is perfect and His word is unchanging. In contrast, lies and deceit are tied to the devil, described in John 8:43-44 as the father of lies, having no truth in him and speaking falsehood from his own resources. This dichotomy serves as a litmus test to discern whether something is grounded in God's written word or formed on a lie that lacks truth. As society advances through technological revolutions, the rapid development of artificial intelligence and other innovations introduces new challenges in distinguishing truth from falsehood. Technologies like ChatGPT, VALL-E, and DALL-E can mimic human voices, generate content, and create convincing fabrications, potentially flooding information channels with propaganda and untruth. The control of information and the risk of misinformation are significant concerns, as human biases embedded in these systems can skew outputs, making it difficult to discern what is true. Christ's warnings in Matthew 24:23-25 highlight the rise of false Christs and prophets who will show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. With each technological advancement, both good and bad emerge, amplifying the potential for deception. As believers, there is a need to remain vigilant, guarding the truth, holding fast to God's word, and walking circumspectly amidst unfolding events.
Itching Ears
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughThe mixture of truth and error in preaching is a grave concern, as it distorts the pure message that God intends for His people. When truth is blended with falsehood, it becomes poison, no longer pure but corrupted. Any amount of error mixed with truth renders it unreliable, leading people away from the path to the Kingdom of God. This corruption often stems from personal desires and the urge to have itching ears satisfied, where individuals seek messages that gratify their own wants rather than adhering to the unadulterated truth. False teachings arise when people prioritize their own lusts over what is right, rejecting sound doctrine for words that comfort or please them. They heap up teachers who cater to their whims, selecting from a variety of messages to suit their moods or preferences, rather than remaining loyal to the pure Word of God. This pursuit of self-gratification leads to turning away from truth to fables, myths, and man-made wisdom, ultimately resulting in deception and division among the faithful. The consequence of suppressing truth and adding human wisdom is a descent into foolishness, as individuals craft their own beliefs to satisfy personal desires. God warns that such actions invite strong delusion, causing people to believe lies and take pleasure in unrighteousness. This mixture of truth and error is astonishing and horrible in His sight, as it leads to destruction and societal collapse, going against the very laws He has established. True ministers must remain steadfast, preaching the uncompromised gospel of the Kingdom of God, ensuring that the message remains pure and untainted by error.
