Americans once took pride in their self-sufficiency, valuing hard work and merit as the path to advancement and wealth. They viewed handouts as a last resort, and accepting welfare or public assistance was considered shameful. Achievements were seen as the result of personal effort, ingenuity, and ambition. However, this can-do attitude has nearly vanished. Instead, many now see the nation as one of entitlement, demanding free food, housing, transportation, internet, education, healthcare, and jobs. This shift towards a culture of entitlement threatens national collapse, as the plans of those seeking something for nothing lead surely to poverty. If this attitude persists, the nation risks crumbling under its own weight.

The Day of the Lord signifies a time of great calamity and destruction, when Jesus Christ will return to overthrow the governments of the earth and establish His Kingdom. Human military might is of no consequence to God, who protects whom He chooses and destroys whom He wills. The size or skill of armies is irrelevant; what matters is God's will and which side He is on. Ancient Israel, at the height of her power, was conquered by Assyria when God saw fit to allow it, her wealth and armies unable to save her. Similarly, America's vaunted power will not save the United States if God's will is contrary. The same moral decay that plagued ancient Israel, including greed, materialism, pride, oppression, perverted justice, and overall degeneracy, mirrors the conditions in modern America. Israel's defeat was so devastating that her people disappeared from history as the Lost Ten Tribes. Without national repentance, national calamity becomes a certainty for any nation, regardless of its status as a superpower. The greatest threat to the United States is not external powers, but its own tendency to disregard the instructions and intentions of the Sovereign who decides the fate of nations.

National collapse can be likened to an avalanche, where seemingly small events or sins, like individual snowflakes, accumulate over time. While a single snowflake may not bring down the mountain, the gradual buildup of these elements can lead to a sudden and devastating slide. God allows people to persist in their wickedness for a time, but eventually, sudden destruction comes from Him as a consequence of their actions. The challenge lies in resisting the urge to focus on predicting which specific event will trigger the collapse, as human nature often struggles with anticipating such crises due to a lack of true vision or a reactive mindset. Instead, the focus should be on the broader danger of the avalanche itself, recognizing that the accumulation of sin and error can lead to ruin.

National collapse, as portrayed through Amos's prophecy to Israel under Jeroboam II, emerges from spiritual complacency, pride, and false security rather than from military or economic weakness. Israel considered itself the "chief nation," boasting in recent victories such as Lo Debar and Karnaim, yet Amos exposes these triumphs as hollow ("Lo Debar" meaning "no thing"), since a greater nation would soon dismantle Israel's pride from Hamath to the Arabah. This warning parallels the fate of other nations Israel had scorned—Calneh, Hamath, Gath—showing that no earthly strength, however vaunted, can withstand God's judgment once corruption sets in. The root cause of this impending collapse is identified as pride: "I abhor the pride of Jacob, and hate his palaces." This pride manifested in self-indulgent leadership, moral degeneracy, and injustice, with rulers most responsible since a nation's destiny largely depends on its leaders' righteousness or wickedness, as illustrated by the contrasting reigns of Josiah and Manasseh, and echoed in the principle that fathers' iniquity affects their children (Exodus 20:5). Because Israel's leaders indulged in self-comparison rather than measuring themselves against God, they could not guide the nation, and therefore they would be "first" among the captives—those most exalted becoming first to fall. Amos structures chapter 6 chiastically to show cause and effect: Israel's leaders "put far off the day of doom," rejecting all warning of collapse as though driving out the very thought, likened to the absurdity of running horses on cliffs or plowing the sea. Their self-assured revelry, described in verses of banqueting and ease, is directly juxtaposed with prophesied plagues and family devastation, revealing how complacent celebration would soon become desperate mourning. This collapse is presented as the direct consequence of relying on covenant status—being "God's people," descendants of Abraham, participants in temple worship—while neglecting true righteousness. The same false security led to Judah's fall to Babylon in Jeremiah's time and Jerusalem's destruction by Rome despite the Jews' claims to Abrahamic descent. The pattern reveals a recurring biblical principle: past privilege or heritage cannot compensate for present unfaithfulness, and complacent nations or religious systems—ancient Israel, Judah, first-century Judea, and by implication a modern nation exhibiting outward religiosity without inward righteousness—stand equally vulnerable to imminent divine judgment and downfall unless genuine repentance intervenes.

Every Feast of Trumpets, it is our nature to picture the positive aspects of this day: the return of Jesus Christ, and our being changed into spirit and starting a new life. However, it is important to realize and consider that there is a correctional side, a warning side of this day. Though we are not called or moved by trumpets today, this day pictures God's actions that take place when the warning trumpets sound. Through comparison of past events to the times in which we live, the message of the trumpet should ring loud and clear in our minds if we will but listen. We are reminded of the picture of the trumpet plagues and the final trumpet that this day represents, leading to the seventh trump, the last trump that will herald in the new, wonderful world tomorrow. There is a responsibility that comes to us for understanding what the seventh trump brings, knowing that all of these events are on the horizon.
