Syncretismas!

Article by Martin G. Collins

Saturnalia and Brumalia were significant pagan celebrations in ancient Rome, continuing well into the fourth century. Brumalia, observed on December 25, marked a time of festivity during the winter solstice, deeply rooted in non-Christian traditions. This date, associated with the worship of the sun god, was later adopted and transformed by early Christian authorities to align with the celebration of the birth of the Son of God, despite its pagan origins. The blending of such rites with Christian themes creates a deceptive mixture that strays from the truth God desires.

'Tis the Season: Help for Our Young People

One of Satan's traits is to make his ways and his holidays attractive, especially to children. Recognizing the allure of Christmas can be a first step in realizing that the devil is trying to manipulate us. God's church does not observe Christmas or New Year's Day due to the absence of a biblical command to do so and the divine command to avoid pagan practices, which these holidays embody in abundance. Jesus, the apostles, and the early church kept the holy days commanded by God, not the holidays like Christmas or New Year's Day, which are not mentioned in the New Testament. God will richly bless those who reject the wrong holidays and keep His true holy days.

The Plain Truth About Christmas

Herbert W. Armstrong Booklet

The celebration of Christmas on December 25th is deeply connected to the pagan festival of Brumalia, which followed the Saturnalia and marked the shortest day of the year and the renewal of the sun. Historical records indicate that the date of this festival was heavily influenced by Brumalia, a time of entrenched pagan customs that proved difficult to displace even with the rise of Christian influence. The popularity of Brumalia, with its riotous merrymaking, was so significant that early Christians found a way to continue its celebration, adapting it with little change in spirit or manner to align with the commemoration of Christ's birth. Despite protests from some Christian leaders in the West and Near East against the frivolous nature of these celebrations, and accusations of idolatry and sun worship from Christians in Mesopotamia, the pagan roots of Brumalia persisted in the observance of Christmas within the Western Church.
