False knowledge arises when individuals pursue secular, philosophical, or purely intellectual study of Scripture as a secondary matter, allowing pride of intellect to inflate the mind and produce an unbalanced view that substitutes human reasoning for the truth of God's inspired Word. This error mixes truth with error, as seen when some in Corinth justified eating meats offered to idols and even attending heathen festivals by claiming freedom based on the knowledge that there is only one God, thereby becoming stumbling blocks to weaker brethren whom they despised. The apostle Paul identifies the root danger in the statement that knowledge puffs up while love edifies, warning that anyone who thinks he knows anything knows nothing yet as he ought to know. Such false knowledge stems first from Satan, who transforms himself into an angel of light to drive believers from one extreme to another, and second from a little learning that fosters slogans, clichés, and an obsessive focus on isolated aspects of truth while neglecting the whole. It manifests in Gnostic tendencies that treat knowledge as an end in itself, isolating the intellect from the heart and will, producing no spiritual fruit and leading to contempt for those slower to learn. The result is a lack of balance, impatience with correction, resentment toward ministers and brethren who emphasize basic principles, and ultimately a failure to apply truth, so that the possessor remains ignorant of God Himself despite accumulating information. In contrast, true knowledge is always joined with love for God, humility, and obedience from the heart, producing edification rather than pride and enabling believers to walk in newness of life rather than tolerating sin through humanly reasoned tolerance.
