Leadership and the Covenants (Part Eight)
Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)God imposed a sense of enmity between the woman and satan along with her seed and his seed. This enmity functions as a protective fear similar to the fear God placed in animals toward humans after the flood. The fear motivates the seed of Eve to avoid satan and his way rather than accept him without caution as occurred in the garden. It serves as a blessing and an invisible wall of protection for those in the line of the woman while acting as a curse for satan and his seed. This protective fear especially applies to the church as the Israel of God and ensures that satan cannot approach unless God grants specific permission to test. The division between those possessing this enmity and those under satan's dominion without protection has continued from the time of Adam and Eve through the flood and into the present.
His Eye Is on the Sparrow (Part Two)
Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)The curse that God imposed placed a fear of Satan upon Eve at the beginning. This fear was not placed upon Satan himself. Satan does not fear mankind at all though he may fear God. The fear placed upon Eve was similar to the fear that God placed upon animals after the Flood. This fear was limited to circumstances between Eve and Satan until her death. As soon as she died that fear was gone from her. Her seed continues living on because the curse mentions Eve and her descendants. God ensured that this fear was placed in all of Eve's descendants. Since every person is a descendant of Eve this fear of Satan remains in people to this day. This fear became a blessing to Eve's descendants because it causes them to stay as far away from Satan as possible. God put this fear in his children the descendants of Eve so that they would not mess with Satan but would instead flee from him. People do not need to be terrified of Satan because they have God's protection. They will not entertain him. If people had no fear of Satan they would invite him in. Some people do that by playing around with sin the temptation of Satan the Devil. Even amongst the descendants of Eve there are differences. The curse does not hit everybody with the same devastating effect. It is very clear that the fruits of the lives of Cain and Abel were vastly different. One had the fear of Satan and the other had none. Abel was a humble man who followed God's instructions. The Bible makes clear he was a man of faith and he believed God and thus Satan's impact upon him was minimal. It appears the fear of Satan was already at work in Abel. Abel had the fear so he stayed clear of Satan. Cain was far different. Cain did not fear Satan. Cain went out from the Lord's presence. Cain walked away from God. Cain's friend was Satan because Cain did not fear Satan. Cain's son Lamech did not fear Satan. Lamech became a murderer just like Cain and a murderer just like Satan. Seth was a blessing by God to replace Abel. The good son who was afraid of Satan was killed. God replaced him and now a new line of descendants of Adam and Eve is arising through Seth. This is the line carrying the seed of those who are afraid of Satan. Virtually every righteous person comes from this line that began with Seth. They were blessed because that is the line that God chose to work through.
His Eye Is on the Sparrow (Part Three)
Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)God instructs his people not to fear Satan or the demons but to fear God alone. Satan has no power to destroy anyone in the Lake of Fire. God has placed the fear of Satan in those descended from Adam and Eve through Seth. This fear serves as protection. God has done something to the minds and spirits of these people similar to what He did to the animals. Animals have a fear of mankind within them. In like manner these people have a fear of Satan so as not to get too close to him. This arrangement protects them and enables them to make use of the curse that God put on Satan and his seed. The world does not regard Satan in this way because its people do not see him for what he is. Satan is a destroyer of everything good in life and he wants people to lose the opportunity for salvation. God purposely created a them-and-us circumstance so that the sanctified would understand and use their gifts from God to resist Satan. A titanic spiritual struggle develops when God sanctifies anyone.
The Spirit of Bondage
Sermon by Martin G. CollinsGod did not give us a spirit of fear or bondage. Faith is the antidote to a spirit of slavish cowardice and timidity, the opposite of boldness from the Holy Spirit.
