The Plan of Salvation in Genesis 3:15
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughThe greatest story of all is God's plan of salvation, introduced very early in His Book. This story emerges in the Garden of Eden, where the narrative of salvation begins. God uses stories to train His children to grow into His character, conveying deep spiritual lessons through narratives that are memorable and effective. In Genesis 3, after the deception by Satan, the serpent, leading to mankind's sin, God pronounces judgments that also serve as prophecies. Specifically, in verse 15, often called the 'Protoevangelium' or 'First Gospel,' God presents a super-condensed story that functions as both prophecy and instruction. This verse outlines the enmity between the serpent and the Seed of the woman, hinting at God's plan to correct the sin and deception through future conflict and resolution. Key elements of this plan are evident in the verse. God Himself is the main actor, initiating enmity and conflict between the serpent and the woman's Seed. This hostility extends to their respective descendants, indicating a divinely appointed struggle. The conflict escalates to a decisive battle where the singular Seed, a man descended from a woman, triumphs over the serpent, though not without suffering, as His heel is bruised. Further details reveal the nature of this Redeemer. The Seed is a man, yet greater than a man, possessing a divine aspect to conquer the spirit of disobedience. This Redeemer must be sinless, living in opposition to Satan's deceptions, and His victory involves vicarious suffering to forgive sins. Redemption also includes a new nature, activated by God's power, to create enmity against Satan, which is not a natural human inclination. Additionally, the plan involves gathering an elect seed, a special group opposed to Satan and his followers. This godly seed participates in a perpetual conflict to destroy the works of the serpent, engaging in a Christian fight alongside the Redeemer. Ultimately, salvation promises the triumph of the Seed, Christ, and all humanity, vanquishing Satan, conquering sin and death, and restoring paradise. Thus, Genesis 3:15 encapsulates the essence of God's plan of salvation, serving as a precursor to the fuller exposition of the Gospel by Jesus Christ during His ministry.
