The Leaning Tower of Pisa, constructed on a faulty foundation in the Middle Ages, now leans 17 feet off the vertical. Efforts to correct this defect have been disappointing and futile. Our spiritual foundation, constructed on the Prophets, Apostles, and Jesus Christ, is solid and reliable. We are the ground on which the foundation is laid. The man who in the Parable of the man who built his house on the rock, took action on what he was taught, applying God's Commandments to his daily life, making him rock-solid in the faith, having proved to himself the reliability of God's commands. The other man may have believed God's words, but failed to follow through with action. He never dug deep or anchored his learning on anything solid, but was shallow in his approach. In good times, no one could tell the difference between these two men, but in troublesome times, one could clearly tell the difference. Without anchorage, the shallow edifice collapsed. The wise man's house, anchored in truth, enabling the owner to discern right from wrong, truth from falsehood, fact from fiction despite the repeated storms of falsehoods and half truths hurled at the structure. All of us must be careful what kinds of materials we build upon it; fire will test the quality of our work. Going onto perfection is tantamount to building on the foundation. We all have different abilities, skills, and talents as well as different circumstances and opportunities. We don't all build on the foundation in the same manner, but God will test the quality of work for each of us in order to see if our edifice will stand. Christ wants a strong and durable temple, firmly anchored to truth, enabling us to grow and refine godly character, going on to perfection.
