In the recent hurricane which struck Fort Myers, Florida, many boats, including large yachts were tossed upon the shore. If these boats had been anchored properly, most could have survived the storm. In Hebrews 6:19, the apostle Paul, referring to Jesus Christ, assures us that "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul firm and secure." The anchor is perhaps the most important piece of equipment on a vessel, holding a ship in place as it is moored for the night, keeping the craft from drifting, and holding the ship steady. From the dawn of history, anchors were constructed out of bags of rocks and logs loaded with lead. Many anchors have been found at the bottom of the Sea of Galilee. As ships grew larger, anchors also increased in size. The largest anchor ever employed (on a Japanese tanker) weighed 73,000 pounds. When Paul was shipwrecked (Acts 27:20), the crew cast 4 anchors. The faith of crew was in anchors, but Paul's faith was in the Hebrews 6:13-19 anchor. Paul instructed the Hebrews that Abraham remained steady in the faith because he was attached to the only important anchor. As we go through our difficulties, we need to stay fixed to God's promises of eternal life. Our hope does not rely on ourselves but upon God. The anchor is most vital when it is unseen, cast into the sea. We may not see how God is working. Our faith and hope is in our Creator-the timeless Anchor, Who does not change and cannot lie.
