During the recent deadly blizzard ravaging Buffalo, more than 39 people died from hypothermia after prolonged exposure to the snow and the elements. Prolonged exposure to severe cold leads to sluggish thinking and eventually confusion and the overwhelming desire to give up, sometimes leading to a bewildering condition of paradoxical undressing from the bodily sensation of becoming burning hot. This tragic process provides a metaphor for a parallel spiritual hypothermia caused from abandoning the warmth of the first love, a condition which almost destroyed the Ephesian congregation. The Laodicean congregation, having a more advanced case of hypothermia, mistakenly thought they had enough heat and light, when paradoxically they were perishing. Currently, God's chosen saints are also being exposed to a spiritual blizzard, bringing darkness and coldness into the entire world. We are admonished to stoke the fire of God's Holy Spirit (II Timothy 1:4) fanning into the flames the gift of God's love, keeping us alive thriving spiritually.
