The Fruit of the Spirit

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

The Bible reveals the Holy Spirit as a divine influence that guides believers away from the corrupting passions and vanities of this world. Yielding to this unseen hand of God, who will not lead us astray, brings true love, joy, and peace into our lives. To be led by the Spirit requires a voluntary and conscious choice to submit to the Word of God, allowing His influence to dominate and even control our actions if we permit it. This guidance is essential for producing the fruit of His Spirit in our lives. The Holy Spirit is described as God's power, manifesting in various forms such as water, symbolizing a flowing influence, and oil, representing healing and nourishment. Words, carrying immense power to instruct and inspire, are also likened to the Spirit, as Jesus declares His words are spirit and life. Through the Spirit, God empowers believers to produce the life He Himself lives, opening access to eternal life. Producing good fruit necessitates the Holy Spirit's power and guidance alongside sound instruction from a qualified teacher, the Word of God, a receptive mind, and proper application of the instruction. The Spirit influences and suggests, but believers must cooperate by making choices, paying attention, setting their wills, and following through to bear fruit. Without this cooperation, little or no fruit is produced. The fruit of the Spirit, though singular, comprises multiple components that will be produced in varying degrees within each person led by the Spirit. These qualities do not originate from human nature but through the foreign influence of the Holy Spirit, ensuring that spiritual fruit reflects the virtues God desires to manifest in mankind.

The Gift of Discerning Spirits

'Ready Answer' by David F. Maas

The guidance of the Holy Spirit is essential for discerning spiritual truths and navigating the deceptions of this age. To discern spirits is a supernatural ability enabled by God's Holy Spirit, allowing a person to determine the source of a spiritual manifestation, whether it originates from God, the Devil, the world, or man. If we possess this gift, God will reveal information about the presence or absence of spiritual entities, detecting evil forces, angelic intervention, or the prompts of His Holy Spirit working within us. We are commanded to test the spirits, examining spiritual teachings with critical faculties to ensure they align with God's Word, as many false prophets have gone out into the world. While using our God-given reasoning is imperative, we should not rely solely on intellect or inward feelings but seek the guidance of God's Holy Spirit. Reading God's Word with understanding via the Holy Spirit enables us to tap into the spiritual realm, know the things of God, and make right judgments. As Jesus declares, the words He speaks are spirit and life, emphasizing the life-giving power of the Spirit in understanding truth. One of the best ways to discern the nature of a spirit is to check if what the spirit says matches up with the Word of God, ensuring alignment with biblical themes and principles.

The Fruit of the Spirit: Joy

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

The joy that is a fruit of God's Spirit has its roots in the realization of His purpose and its outworking that transforms us into His image. Biblical joy begins when God calls, and we hear the gospel, understand it, and believe it. Hearing and believing the gospel leads to repentance, forgiveness, and reconciliation with God. As the apostle notes, followers receive the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit. This joy arises from yielding to His creative purpose, allowing His Spirit to guide and transform us. If God is present in our lives, the joy He experiences can begin in us, serving as a sign that life has found its purpose through His guidance.
