An Age of Mass Delusion
Commentary by John W. RitenbaughDelusions arise when individuals or groups are led astray into false beliefs held with dogged persistence despite strong contrary evidence. Such convictions often begin on a limited scale but can expand into widespread mass delusions that affect entire nations, diminish quality of life, generate fear, and sometimes incite hatred, murder, or warfare. The material traces this progression from isolated cases, such as repeated Big Foot or UFO sightings, to larger historical tragedies like the Salem witch trials of 1692-1693, where prolonged religious discussions of demon possession created fertile ground for accusations that resulted in nineteen hangings and seven deaths in prison. In the present age, similar dynamics operate on a massive scale within the Western world and especially the United States, where political figures and media have fostered entrenched false beliefs, as illustrated by an elected official's unyielding insistence that a prominent Black candidate is white. These modern instances build on repeated exposure to falsehoods until minds become fixed, mirroring the pattern that enabled past catastrophes. The broader message connects these events to an ongoing process in which the great Dragon deceives the whole world generation after generation through lies, so that only Jesus Christ has fully escaped delusion. Scripture in II Thessalonians 2:9-12 describes the lawless one's arrival accompanied by power, signs, and lying wonders that produce strong delusion among those who reject the love of the truth, leading them to believe the lie and face condemnation. Ultimately, the central falsehood concerns Satan's self-presentation as god when he is merely a demon, a deception the world will accept on the basis of appearances rather than God's Word.
