Falsehood weaves deception that unravels, as the serpent first lied in Genesis 3:4, contradicting God's command, while Eve added to His words in Genesis 3:3. The ninth commandment forbids bearing false witness, and Christ expanded it to all deceit. Satan is the father of lies, yet God cannot lie since truth defines His character. Jesus stated that abiding in His word reveals truth that makes one free. Lies produce separation and distrust; false witnesses receive the penalty meant for the accused. Proverbs shows deception ruins relationships, and Paul urged believers to speak truth as members of one another. Modern falsehoods fill journalism and society, demanding constant truth in speech.

Strangers to the Truth (Part One)

CGG Weekly by Mike Ford

Falsehood weaves a tangled web of deception, as seen in the story of Alexi Santana, who fabricated an extraordinary life to gain admission to Princeton University, only to be revealed as James Hogue, a man with a criminal past. This illustrates how lies, no matter how elaborate, eventually unravel. The first recorded lie in Scripture appears in Genesis 3:4, where the serpent deceives Eve by saying, "You will not surely die," directly contradicting God's command. Some suggest an earlier distortion in Genesis 3:3, when Eve adds to God's words by claiming He forbade touching the fruit, though He did not. Whether this was an attempt to strengthen the command or an exaggeration, it shows the danger of straying from truth, even with good intent. God's instruction in Exodus 20:16, "Do not bear false witness against your neighbor," stands clear and needs no addition, though Christ expands its spiritual scope to encompass all forms of deceit. Satan, described by Jesus in John 8:44 as a liar and the father of lies, exemplifies the deadly nature of falsehood. Eve, despite hearing God's edict, succumbed to the serpent's blatant deception, highlighting how easily lies can ensnare. Jesus contrasts this with the liberating power of truth, declaring in John 8:31-32, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Yet, like the Pharisees who denied their bondage despite their history, many remain strangers to truth, often viewing it as relative rather than absolute. Deceit permeates human interactions, with synonyms like prevaricate, dissemble, and obfuscate clouding the wrongness of lying, reflecting a societal struggle to confront its true nature.

The Ninth Commandment

Bible Study by Martin G. Collins

The ninth commandment protects the relationship with God by requiring true witness to the truth, since God is truth and those who speak truth from the heart abide with Him. Speaking the truth demonstrates love toward others, whereas lies of any kind produce separation and distrust. Bearing false witness means lying, while a faithful witness declares events and information accurately without alteration for personal advantage. Under the Old Covenant a false witness received the penalty intended for the accused, and God views lying as an abomination. Satan is the father of liars and influences the world to follow his character of deception, yet God cannot lie because truth is an essential attribute of His character. Denying that Jesus is the Christ constitutes lying, as does claiming to know Christ while failing to keep His commandments or asserting love for God while breaking His laws. The wrath of God comes upon those who suppress the truth in order to avoid admitting wrongdoing, and such suppression makes people slaves to sin. The habit of lying begins in earliest childhood and becomes part of the character until removed through repentance. Liars will ultimately face the second death and will not be permitted in the New Jerusalem. Lying produces penalties including poor health, corruption, suffering, and loss of reputation. A Christian must remove every vestige of falsehood from the character to conform to the image of Christ. Upon repentance Israel must eliminate lies from its speech and conduct, and the redeemed 144,000 are found without deceit.

The Lack of Love in Lying

CGG Weekly by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Falsehood runs at the heart of the world's recent troubles and appears everywhere in modern journalism, the advertising industry, scientific studies, and other sectors. It seems that no one speaks the truth anymore, as people offer lies, half-truths, or facts altered to fit a political purpose. God thundered from Mount Sinai that one shall not bear false witness against a neighbor. The ninth commandment covers all untruths, including both legal and commonplace lying, to enhance trust within a community. The Hebrew word k&257;&7717;aš means to deceive, lie, fail, be untrue, deny, dissemble, or deal falsely. Those who lie or deceive in any way prove themselves unreliable and undermine relationships until the entire community breaks down. The book of Proverbs describes how deception undercuts and ruins relationships in multiple ways. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus Christ forbade swearing and instructed that a person's yes should be yes and no should be no. The apostle Paul instructed believers to speak truth with each neighbor because they are members of one another. Humanity reeks of deception and falsehood with no signs of improvement. Each person must resolve to speak and represent the truth at all times to restore a small measure of trust to this world.
