God Works in Mysterious Ways (Part Five)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughGod's ways, though sometimes puzzling in individual acts, are clear to us because He initiated our calling and voluntarily revealed Himself to us. Left to mankind's natural inclinations, there would never be a relationship between the Creator and His creations. Though we are created in the image of God, by nature we are far too different from Him to establish a good relationship on our own. Mankind, without divine revelation, is thick regarding spiritual truth and simply not interested in seeking God. Jesus Christ, speaking in the temple, declared that He was sent by the Father, whom many did not know, emphasizing the gap between human understanding and divine reality. He taught that a relationship with Him is necessary to understand spiritual matters and to walk in the light of life. Yet, confusion and doubt persisted among the people, as they failed to grasp His identity and the truth of His words. Jesus reiterated that only through Him can one know the Father, for no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. God operates His purpose as He sees fit, calling those He chooses to be part of His plan. He reveals Himself to whom He decides, and mankind's lack of knowledge stems from paying little attention to what God says. The reality of Christ's incarnation fails to attract mankind's interest sufficiently to foster a relationship. From the beginning, as seen with Adam and Eve, mankind's carnal mind focuses on earthly desires, creating a formidable barrier to a relationship with God. Despite direct commands and warnings from God, their desires led them to disobedience, illustrating why a relationship with Him is not initiated by man. Jesus warned that following Him requires sacrifice and bearing one's cross, highlighting the difficulty of overcoming carnality. God perseveres patiently with us, working through our weaknesses, but the resistance of mankind remains the cause of the struggle. Without God's initiation and continuous strengthening, we would be too inconsistent in our love for Him to maintain the relationship. Jesus emphasized that without Him, we can do nothing, underscoring our desperate need for a relationship with Him to produce fruit that glorifies God.
