Jesus Christ, the Bearer of Sin

Sermonette by David C. Grabbe

The location of Jesus Christ's crucifixion holds significant symbolic meaning in relation to the Day of Atonement ritual. As described in Hebrews 13:12, He suffered outside the gate, away from the temple, mirroring the azazel goat which was led outside the camp after becoming sin. Unlike typical sin offerings killed at the tabernacle, His sacrifice did not occur at the temple but across the Kidron Valley on a slope of the Mount of Olives. The gospels note that He was led away, just as the azazel was, and His bearing of sin was not an immediate death. He endured hours of suffering on the tree, feeling every moment as He bore our transgressions, becoming sin and a curse outside the gate.
