Doors represent a significant symbol mentioned 273 times in Scripture. Jesus Christ refers to Himself as the Door of the sheep in John 10. The door provides access to God the Father and salvation through Jesus Christ. It offers protection from threats such as false ministers and spiritual adversaries. The door serves as a separator distinguishing the flock of God from the world. When open, it signifies fellowship with God, Jesus Christ, and other believers. It allows movement in and out, symbolizing the daily walk with the Shepherd leading to an abundant life. In the Passover account, the door stands for the whole house, and the blood ensures the destroyer cannot enter.

Don't Go Out of the House!

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

The door represents the entirety of the house. The death angel cannot enter the house if unable to pass the door. The door in this context stands for the whole house. The way into the house was surrounded by the blood of the lamb on the threshold, doorposts, and lintel. The command forbids going out the door until morning. The instruction is to remain in the house. The door symbolizes the entrance through which one passes into the house. Jesus Christ stated that He is the door of the sheep. If any man enters by Him, that man will be saved. The door grants access to pasture and fullness of life under protection. The shepherd lay down across the door and became the door. This symbolizes protection and care. The door provides the sole lawful access to the sheepfold. The sheepfold is a shelter and place of security with only one entrance. The door stands for Christ through whom the true shepherd enters. The metaphor of the door connects to the house as a structure containing the family. The door marks the point of entry into the household of God. The house expands in meaning to include the church as a spiritual house built of living stones. The door remains the sole entry into this structure. The instruction derived from the door and blood requires remaining inside the house.

Go Not Out of the House

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

The door in the Passover account symbolizes the entrance to the house. The door is put for the whole house through metonymy. The blood applied to the door and its posts ensures that the destroyer cannot enter the house. The Hebrew word for basin and threshold is the same word. The lamb may have been slain in the door so that its blood surrounded the entrance. The command forbids going out of the door until morning. In a later teaching Jesus Christ declares that He is the door of the sheep. The sheepfold is an enclosure that has only one door. Entry must be through that door in order to be saved and to find pasture. A person who does not enter by the door is a thief and a robber.

Don't Leave the House!
