Building on Christ's Foundation
Sermonette by Martin G. CollinsJesus Christ is to be the foundation on which the temple of God's church and our individual lives are built. He is not merely a foundation or a cornerstone, but the Chief Cornerstone upon which the prophets and apostles have established their teachings. We are called to use the words of the apostles and prophets in God's Word to develop the righteousness of Christ with His help. Our works require more than mere effort or physical activity, such as spreading God's Word or serving in His church; they demand the pursuit of the righteousness of Jesus Christ as the cornerstone and foundation of our lives. All the gifts and wealth of the world are not pleasing to God and will not endure unless they are built upon this righteousness, upon the foundation of Jesus Christ. As the temple of God, if we submit to Him, He will build our foundation on Jesus Christ, creating an everlasting foundation of righteousness that cannot be destroyed.
The Foundation of the World
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughJesus Christ stands as the unshakable foundation of the church, the Rock upon which all true faith is built. In His teachings, He declares Himself the solid ground; if we hear and act upon His words, we build on a foundation that endures any storm. He is the great Petra, the immovable Rock, not merely a stone, but the bedrock of His church, ensuring its stability through all trials. As the spiritual Rock that accompanied the Israelites in the wilderness, He sustained them, revealing His enduring presence and support. In the house of God, we are built upon the foundation of the apostles and the prophets, yet Jesus Christ Himself is the chief cornerstone, the primary load-bearing stone. He underlies and upholds everything, the precious Rock on which all else rests. Without Him, the structure would collapse, for He is the strength beneath and the unifying force throughout, joining every part together. His teachings are the primary basis of our foundation, surpassing all others, and His priority must guide us in understanding the full counsel of God. Paul laid the foundation for the church by preaching the gospel Christ brought, warning against building upon any other foundation. Any deviation from this true foundation, any teaching contrary to His gospel, cannot support the truth and will fail, proving itself an imitation rather than true faith. Christ's role as the foundation is paramount; He is the most important Prophet and Apostle, and His words must always take precedence. We are called to stand on this sure foundation, ensuring that what we build aligns with His truth, for only then can we withstand the challenges and remain steadfast.
The Solid Foundation of God
Sermonette by Richard T. RitenbaughOur spiritual foundation is perfect, built on the apostles and the prophets, with Jesus Christ Himself as the chief cornerstone. This sure and solid foundation, inspired by Him, stands unblemished. Yet, we play two vital roles in relation to this foundation. First, we are the ground on which it is laid. As illustrated in the parable of the wise and foolish builders, both heard the Word, but only the wise man acted on it, anchoring his life in rock-solid faith through obedience to God's principles. The foolish man, though knowledgeable, failed to apply what he learned, and when storms came, his life collapsed for lack of a true foundation in Christ. Second, we build upon this foundation. As taught by the apostle Paul, Christ is the only true foundation, and any teaching apart from Him holds no substance. Each of us builds differently, with varying materials like gold, silver, or straw, according to our abilities and circumstances. Yet, God tests every work to ensure it is firmly anchored to the rock, for He is building a strong temple. We must build with caution, using the sound principles of God's Word, enduring trials to refine us. By holding to basic truths, avoiding fruitless arguments over words, and remembering our calling to depart from iniquity and pursue holiness, we reorient ourselves to this foundation. Thus, our foundation in Jesus Christ is unassailable, and by practicing what we learn and building carefully, we become vessels of honor, prepared for every good work He assigns.
