Liberty Under the Law

Sermon by Mark Schindler

The foundation of freedom in our republic traces back to the Pilgrims, whose actions established a profound example of God's principle of liberty under law. This principle, embedded in the document that has shaped all subsequent law, reflects the essence of true liberty as living as we should, not as we please. Through Jesus Christ dwelling in us, we have the liberty to embrace God's way of give, rather than the way of get, finding freedom where the Spirit of the Lord is present. True liberty under law means abiding within God's hedge, faithfully walking in the spirit of the law. The blessings and freedoms from our enemy come from living through Jesus Christ with outgoing concern, not selfish desires. God has granted us, through His Holy Spirit, the liberty under law to move freely and peacefully within all His commandments, keeping us free and at peace as we fulfill the law in the spirit, striving to be just like Him. This liberty, connected to the concept of release and purity in the Scriptures, signifies a flowing freedom, a spontaneity of outflow that preserves us pure for the return of Christ. Those liberated by Him are sanctified by living the liberty of God's way of life under His law. We must appreciate the incredible privilege and ability He has given us to live both the letter and the spirit of His law of liberty, consciously worshipping our Great God in spirit and truth. The Pilgrims of the Mayflower Compact promised obedience to the laws, finding liberty in law through their strength of character to abide by it. We, however, have been given something greater through Jesus Christ: real liberty under God's law and the Spirit of God to abide by it, sanctified by the pouring out of His Holy Spirit on those who will be His at His coming. As He declared, the Spirit of the Lord is upon Him to set us at liberty, empowering us to do all the words of this law.
