Be Strong and Work
Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by David C. GrabbeIn the midst of challenges faced by the church today, which echo the struggles of ancient Judah, God's message through Haggai resonates with timeless relevance. As the Jews faced opposition and discouragement while rebuilding the temple, God spoke to their leaders and people, urging them to be strong. He repeated this command three times—to the governor, to the high priest, and to all the people—emphasizing that regardless of position or circumstance, they must be strong and work. His assurance was clear: He is with them, and His presence is their strength. This call to be strong applies to us as well, as we labor on the spiritual temple. God is unconcerned with outward appearances or material measures of success, as seen in the comparison between Solomon's temple and the seemingly inferior second temple. Instead, He urges us to focus on His presence and purpose. Whether serving within a church organization or working on our individual lives as dwelling places for Him, we are called to be strong and work. His Spirit remains among us, and we should not fear, for He is with us, ready to help us build according to His will. So, as God declared on the last day of the Feast long ago, let us be strong and work, knowing that He is with us.
