Psalm Genres (Part Four): Messianic (continued)

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

The character of Jesus Christ, as revealed through the Messianic Psalms, stands as a perfect standard of righteousness and godliness. In Psalm 15, His flawless nature is outlined as the one who qualifies to abide in God's tabernacle and dwell in His holy hill. He walks uprightly, works righteousness, speaks truth in His heart, refrains from backbiting, does no evil to His neighbor, and rejects reproach against His friend. He despises the vile and honors those who fear the Lord, maintaining perfect judgment in His interactions. His insight into the hearts of others is unerring, as He sees into their motivations and responds appropriately, demonstrating His authority as the ultimate Judge. In Psalm 16, His deep dependence on the Father is evident, as He gives all credit to God for His works and acknowledges that His goodness is nothing apart from Him. His love for the saints is profound, viewing them as His excellent ones in whom all His delight resides, fueling His mission to bring them into the kingdom. He steadfastly avoids sin, rejecting idolatry and worldly temptations to remain focused on His purpose as a sinless sacrifice. His relationship with the Father is one of constant communion, with God always before Him, providing counsel and strength, ensuring He shall not be moved. His confidence in resurrection is unwavering, knowing the Father will not leave His soul in Sheol nor allow His Holy One to see corruption, leading to fullness of joy in God's presence. In Psalm 110, His character is further revealed as the anointed God, Priest, and King, uniquely fulfilling roles no other can. He is depicted as a victorious ruler and divine warrior, executing judgment among nations and establishing His kingdom with righteousness. His satisfaction in victory is complete, refreshing Himself after triumph with His head held high, not in vainglory, but in the fulfillment of a job well done for the sake of His people. His desire to be with His elect forever and bestow all good things upon them underscores His enduring commitment and love.

What Is 'Son of God'?

Sermonette by Richard T. Ritenbaugh
