Are You a True Friend of Jesus Christ?

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

Jesus Christ embodies the essence of loyal friendship, calling us into a profound relationship with Him. He speaks of us as His friends, emphasizing a bond that requires mutual loyalty. When He declares, "You are My friends," He addresses us on a human level, inviting us to contrast His perfect friendship with even the best earthly relationships we have known. His ultimate expression of love and friendship is seen in His willingness to lay down His life for us, a sacrifice that stands unparalleled. Reflecting on His death reveals the exceptional nature of His friendship. Jesus did not have to die, yet He chose to, demonstrating a love beyond human capacity. He deliberately went to the cross, knowing He would die for our salvation, which sets His act apart from any human sacrifice. Even more striking is that He died for us while we were yet enemies, showing incredible love that surpasses our understanding. His death was not only physical but also spiritual, enduring separation from the Father to bear our sins, ensuring we might never face such separation. Jesus further defines friendship with Him through obedience. He states, "You are My friends if you do whatever I command you," calling for active, continuous, and comprehensive obedience. This obedience is not merely refraining from wrong but actively loving one another, praying, and worshiping together. It is a daily, ongoing commitment to follow His commands in all things, approaching Him with humble submission to do whatever He asks. In this way, we are lifted not as slaves, but as friends of Jesus, sharing in an intimate, loving relationship with Him and the Father from which nothing can separate us.
