The Bronze Serpent of Moses
Sermon by James C. StoertzReturning to ordinary life after a spiritual high often brings immediate trials and discouragement, yet the story of the bronze serpent in Numbers 21 offers a powerful blueprint for enduring these wilderness seasons. Facing exhaustion and hardship after a lengthy detour, Israel fell into their recurring pattern of grumbling against God, prompting a plague of fiery serpents (saraphim) that was only remedied when Moses lifted a bronze serpent on a pole so that those who looked upon it lived. This narrative finds its ultimate fulfillment in John 3:14-15, where Jesus reveals the event as a prophecy of His crucifixion—promising eternal life to all who look to Him in faith—while II Kings 18 offers a sobering warning against turning God's past gifts into idols. Ultimately, just as the lifted serpent brought life without instantly removing the snakes from the camp, looking up to Christ does not always immediately eliminate our trials, but it transforms our perspective, reminding us to abandon complaint for gratitude and to trust the same God who is as present in the mundane post-Feast wilderness as He is on the mountain peak.
