Who Are the Twenty-four Elders (Revelation 4:4)?

Bible Questions & Answers

In the depiction of God's throne room in heaven, as described in Revelation 4 and 5, the twenty-four elders hold a prominent role. These elders are not redeemed human beings, as no man except Jesus Christ has ascended to heaven where God's throne resides. According to the correct translation of Revelation 5:9-10, it is clear that they are not changed mortals but powerful spirit beings who assist God at His throne. The text specifies that the saints, not the elders, are redeemed by His blood from every tribe, language, people, and nation, and are made kings and priests to reign on the earth. Thus, the twenty-four elders are part of the created heavenly host, angels of high rank and honor, given positions of responsibility in the government of God through which He rules the universe. Revelation 5:8 notes that each elder holds a harp and golden bowls full of incense, symbolic of the prayers of the saints. The harp suggests their role in praising God in song, possibly leading vast choirs of angels. The golden bowls hint at their responsibility in carrying out God's answers to prayer, acting as trusted servants in His divine administration.
