The Offerings of Leviticus (Part Seven): The Sin and Trespass Offerings
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughSinlel's destructive influence is like a cancer, often invisible but silently working to destroy us. Sin desires to drag us back to our former state, undermining our growth in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. Though we might have imagined that life would become easier as we grow in holiness, it often seems to work in the opposite direction, with sin becoming more apparent in ourselves. Yet, this is ultimately good, for as we mature in faith, we discern more of the filthy corruption of sin within us. This awareness is evidence of growth, and it is encouraging to know that to overcome sin, we must first recognize this corruption. Moreover, it is wonderful to understand that our merciful God has covered even this accumulated sin we were unaware of, as Christ's blood is sufficient to cover the sins of the whole world. Seeing more of the evil aspects of human nature should help us grasp the profound implications of Christ's sacrifice and motivate us to cry out to God for His Kingdom to come, yearning for the time we will be free of the pulls of the flesh.
Original Sin and Holiness
Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)Sin is a vast, contagious, and forceful moral disease that permeates the entire human race, affecting every rank, class, nation, and language through the impulses it motivates. It is much more than the visible acts of transgression; it resides deep within the heart, the source of our thoughts and actions. As Jesus Christ reveals in Matthew 15:19, out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, and blasphemies, indicating that sin exists within before any outward act occurs. This disease, akin to a spirit, possesses the power to motivate the actions seen on the outside, a product of the mind of satan inculcated through contact with him, his demons, and the worldly systems he created. The apostle Paul, in Romans 7, describes sin as an ever-present influence, an evil force dwelling within, even in a converted person. He admits to his own carnality, noting that sin still motivates actions contrary to his will, likening it to a law, an active force like gravity, constantly pulling toward wrong. Sin, therefore, is not merely the act but the underlying influence that drives one to miss the mark or go off the path. It consists of thinking, saying, doing, or imagining anything not in conformity with the mind and will of God, an inward and outward departure from His revealed will and character. This pervasive nature of sin underscores its danger, as it remains a constant internal struggle, a battle within each person. Even with God's Spirit, the residue of the satan-damaged heart exerts its influence, creating a tension akin to two armies poised for battle within a single individual. Yet, God provides the means to combat this disease, offering a new heart and spirit, empowering us to strive against sin's pull, though it will never be fully subdued until we are changed in His Kingdom.
