A Primer On Spirit

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

The spirit of this world, as an invisible and immaterial force, exerts a pervasive influence on human thoughts and actions, often leading to evil. It is driven by satan, a spirit being who tempted Adam and Eve into sin using words as a powerful tool. His spirit permeates the world, invisibly fostering covetous, angry, prideful, and destructive thoughts that motivate harmful actions. These fiery darts of the wicked one, often in the form of words, infiltrate minds and hearts, pushing individuals toward choices that align with his anti-God, anti-Christ way of life. This spirit of the times, or zeitgeist, reflects the prevailing attitudes of a given period, city, or nation, subtly shaping behaviors on a large scale. It can manifest as fear, confidence, or patriotism, but because it is of the world, it is rarely good. God has permitted satan to spread knowledge of this destructive spiritual power to evil-minded men who use it to control masses, bending them to their will. Examples include historical figures like Adolph Hitler, who entrapped people into blind obedience, and modern influences in America where lies and repeated distortions convince many that evil acts, such as murdering the unborn, are good. In contrast, God's Holy Spirit stands as a pure, clean, and righteous influence, always aiming to liberate and produce life on the God level. Unlike the spirit of this world, which enslaves through deception, God's Spirit exudes love and upbuilding qualities, never employing twisted words or fiery darts. We are positioned between these opposing forces, charged with the responsibility to choose which influence to follow, resisting the evil spirit of this world and embracing the holy essence of God's mind through time spent with Him.

What Is the Holy Spirit?

'Ready Answer' by David C. Grabbe

The spirit of this world is not a separate being but represents the world's attitude, inclination, tendency, atmosphere, mood, or frame of mind. It serves as the motivating impulse of the culture, always manifesting in ways that are anti-God. This spirit moves people whom God has not redeemed to conduct themselves in lust, fulfilling the desires of their flesh and mind, placing themselves under the wrath of God. It sweeps mankind along a spiritual channel to keep them in opposition to their Creator. Though spirit cannot be seen, its effects are evident in the actions and attitudes of mankind, revealing the influence at work. The spirit of the world stirs up the spirit in man, inducing individuals to think, feel, and ultimately act in ways contrary to God's will. A fear of sacrifice or giving up what is valuable stems from this spirit, contrasting sharply with the principles of God's Spirit.
