A Primer On Spirit
Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)The spirit of this world, as an invisible and immaterial force, exerts a pervasive influence on human thoughts and actions, often leading to evil. It is driven by satan, a spirit being who tempted Adam and Eve into sin using words as a powerful tool. His spirit permeates the world, invisibly fostering covetous, angry, prideful, and destructive thoughts that motivate harmful actions. These fiery darts of the wicked one, often in the form of words, infiltrate minds and hearts, pushing individuals toward choices that align with his anti-God, anti-Christ way of life. This spirit of the times, or zeitgeist, reflects the prevailing attitudes of a given period, city, or nation, subtly shaping behaviors on a large scale. It can manifest as fear, confidence, or patriotism, but because it is of the world, it is rarely good. God has permitted satan to spread knowledge of this destructive spiritual power to evil-minded men who use it to control masses, bending them to their will. Examples include historical figures like Adolph Hitler, who entrapped people into blind obedience, and modern influences in America where lies and repeated distortions convince many that evil acts, such as murdering the unborn, are good. In contrast, God's Holy Spirit stands as a pure, clean, and righteous influence, always aiming to liberate and produce life on the God level. Unlike the spirit of this world, which enslaves through deception, God's Spirit exudes love and upbuilding qualities, never employing twisted words or fiery darts. We are positioned between these opposing forces, charged with the responsibility to choose which influence to follow, resisting the evil spirit of this world and embracing the holy essence of God's mind through time spent with Him.
What Is the Holy Spirit?
'Ready Answer' by David C. GrabbeThe spirit of this world is not a separate being but represents the world's attitude, inclination, tendency, atmosphere, mood, or frame of mind. It serves as the motivating impulse of the culture, always manifesting in ways that are anti-God. This spirit moves people whom God has not redeemed to conduct themselves in lust, fulfilling the desires of their flesh and mind, placing themselves under the wrath of God. It sweeps mankind along a spiritual channel to keep them in opposition to their Creator. Though spirit cannot be seen, its effects are evident in the actions and attitudes of mankind, revealing the influence at work. The spirit of the world stirs up the spirit in man, inducing individuals to think, feel, and ultimately act in ways contrary to God's will. A fear of sacrifice or giving up what is valuable stems from this spirit, contrasting sharply with the principles of God's Spirit.
The Holy Spirit and the Trinity (Part Two)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughMankind is surrounded by truth about God, yet there is a powerful impulse to reject it, often successfully. This rejection is influenced by the spirit of this world, a force that operates in the unseen realm. In Ephesians 2:1-2, Paul describes how we once walked according to the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience. This spirit is not the prince himself but an impersonal force or mood that impels and influences people toward sin. It is a powerful attitude, energizing conduct that produces sin and death, and it works within the minds of the disobedient. This spirit, originating from the adversary, was first instilled in Adam and Eve, leading them into sin with their consent. It spread to their progeny like a contagious disease, perpetuating the original infection across generations. Today, the adversary continues this process, aided by those similarly affected, resulting in a widespread rejection of God's truth. As Jesus states in John 8:43-45, those influenced by this spirit cannot understand His speech because they are of their father, the devil, and are driven by his desires, rejecting the truth He speaks. Before God's intervention, we were controlled by this evil principle of life within the world's system. It is a mood inclined to destroy and fail, holding us in bondage. However, God offers His Spirit to replace this destructive force with one that is joyous, positive, and selfless, enabling us to make right choices and achieve true success. In John 6:63, Jesus emphasizes that it is the Spirit that quickens and makes alive, contrasting with the spirit of this world that leads to death. His words, being spirit and life, activate and motivate toward true life, unlike the spirit of the world that ensnares and deceives.
The Holy Spirit
Sermonette by David C. GrabbeGod's Holy Spirit typically refers to the mind of God and Christ, which is added to our human spirit to create a sound mind by which we witness of God.
The Christian and the World (Part Four)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe spirit of this world influences mankind subject to the present order of things. This spirit is evil and under the power of the evil one. All have lived according to the course of this world, which is a path or way rendered from the Greek word aion. Human nature became evil through contact with the spirit of this world after Adam and Eve turned from God. Evil is passed on by the spirit of the age into which a person is born, not by procreation. Parents bear responsibility to ensure the right spirit is in the home to nurture children and defend them against the spirit of this world. Adam and Eve chose the way of the knowledge of good and evil, and all their progeny have followed the same path by submitting to the spirit of this world. God permitted Satan to continue and is not responsible for human nature. The natural heart of man is desperately corrupt and must be completely replaced through conversion and transformation, which remove the spirit of man and the spirit of this world. Human nature knows how to do good things yet remains intrinsically evil and unacceptable for the Kingdom of God. A converting person can act as a willing conduit for the spirit of this world without being possessed. The spirit of this world lies just below the surface in actions and words that dishonor God. God forces choices between Himself and the spirit of this world. Faith combined with love enables the choice of God's way over the spirit of this world.
The Holy Spirit and the Trinity (Part Three)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe spirit of this world functions as an impersonal yet impelling and compelling force that motivates disobedience and sin. Its source lies in Satan, whose destructive, murderous, covetous, accusative, irresponsible, and deceitful mind seeks to dominate and enslave human minds to his rebellious way. This spirit entered humanity when Satan incited doubt in Adam and Eve, infecting them with his foul spirit of rebellion against God and thereby becoming mankind's spiritual father. It manifests internally as attitudes such as fear, faintness of heart, and panic that debilitate individuals and spread contagiously to others, much as cheerleaders or leaders can transmit enthusiasm or despair to followers. The same principle appears when the removal of a shepherd scatters the sheep or when faint-hearted soldiers undermine an army's morale. Because this spirit resists and masks truth, those under its influence hear God's words without understanding or accepting them, as seen when the Pharisees rejected Jesus despite physical descent from Abraham. Scripture identifies them as children of their father the devil who perform his lusts, while those of God recognize and follow the voice of truth because they share His predisposing Spirit. The contrast appears clearly in tests distinguishing the spirit of truth from the spirit of error: those of the world speak its message and are heard by the world, whereas those of God hear and respond to apostolic teaching. Even after conversion the spirit of this world remains capable of rising within believers, requiring continual resistance through choice and yielding to the greater power of God's holy, wise, and moral Spirit. God sovereignly stirs human spirits to accomplish His purposes, yet He never tempts to evil and always provides a way of escape, ensuring that His children can overcome the world's influence and be regathered around His truth when the time comes.

More Excellent Sacrifice
Sermon by Clyde FinkleaThe spirit of this world is the spirit of Satan, the prince of the power of the air who works in the children of disobedience. If one is not yielding to and being influenced by the Spirit of God, then one yields to the spirit of this world. There are only two spirits, the Spirit of God and the spirit of Satan. Satan is the ruler of this world. When one yields to the spirit of this world, sin lies at the door ready to pounce and consume. The spirit of this world produces evil works and fruits. One must not be conformed to this world according to the spirit of this world but be transformed by the renewing of the mind through yielding to the Spirit of God.
