The Lunar Sabbath or the Seventh-Day Sabbath: Which?
'Ready Answer' by Charles WhitakerFor millennia, the world has adhered to a seven-day week, with the first day following the seventh day in a continuous cycle. The seventh-day Sabbath, observed by the Jews and the churches of God, is named for its position as the seventh day of this recurring cycle, established at the end of Creation Week when God pronounced it holy. God taught this Sabbath to the children of Israel after their exodus from Egypt by controlling the fall of manna, which did not appear on the seventh day, as detailed in Exodus 16. This day became enshrined in the Hebrew calendar, and the Jews have observed it consistently since that time. Unlike the lunar Sabbath, which resets with each new moon and falls on varying days of the week, the seventh-day Sabbath remains fixed within the seven-day cycle, unaffected by the lunar month. It consistently occurs on the day the Jews call Sabbath, which the Romans named Saturday. The Scriptures emphasize the cycle of the seventh day in determining its timing, with no connection to the new moon or lunar cycles, as seen in passages such as Exodus 23:12, 31:15, 17, 34:21, 35:2, and Deuteronomy 5:13-14. Christ, as our example, observed the seventh-day Sabbath, entering the synagogue on this day to read, as recorded in Luke 4:16-17. During His time, the Jews continued to keep this correct weekly occasion, and there is no record of dispute over the day He observed, affirming that He kept the same Sabbath as the Jews, the seventh-day Sabbath described in Genesis 2:2-3 and Exodus 20:8-11. Throughout history, God has preserved the knowledge of the seventh-day Sabbath, ensuring that the count of days from any seventh-day Sabbath back to the original one in Genesis remains divisible by seven. Despite various calendars developed over time, it is a remarkable act of providence that God has maintained the true Sabbath day to the present, teaching us the correct day without allowing a single day to be lost in the count.
