Sabbathkeeping (Part 2)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

The Sabbath holds a profound significance as a source of strength and energy in our relationship with God. It is not merely a day of physical rest, but a vital appointment with Him, designed to build and deepen our connection. The central purpose of this break from normal routine is to know Him, for as Jesus said, knowing Him is eternal life. Each Sabbath offers a weekly, and sometimes annual, opportunity to devote time to Him, ensuring that our relationship does not get lost amidst life's other activities. From the proper use of this day, in fellowshipping with Him, true spiritual rest and refreshment are derived. As Isaiah 40:28-29 reveals, the everlasting God, the Creator, gives power to the faint and increases strength to those who have none. When our relationship with God is right, the Sabbath becomes a day to be re-energized, not primarily through physical rest, but through seeking Him. Power flows from His presence, and if our mind is focused elsewhere, the connection is lost. Isaiah 40:30-31 further emphasizes that those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, mounting up with wings like eagles, running without weariness, and walking without fainting. This is the secret to a vital life, flowing from the relationship with Him. Similarly, Psalm 84:5-12 beautifully illustrates that blessed is the man whose strength is in God, for a single day in His courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. God, as our Light and Protector, withholds no good thing from those who walk uprightly, offering grace, glory, and refreshment. The Sabbath, therefore, should not be viewed as a day of restrictions, but as a liberating opportunity to engage in truly refreshing activities that cannot be equally prioritized on other days. In fellowship with Him, God, our Deliverer and Liberator, provides the true rest that removes burdens, filling us with confidence and security to face trials and temptations with the assurance of victory through faithful service.
