Sabbathkeeping (Part 3)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe Sabbath holds a vital place in God's purpose, serving as a time to cease from our own busy-ness and focus on His pleasure. It is not merely a day to stop working, but a holy ground where we are to honor Him by refraining from the activities that occupy us the other six days of the week. This includes not pursuing our own desires or business, but instead dedicating the day to God's will, approaching it with an attitude of delight as He expects. True rest on the Sabbath is a spiritual blessing conferred by God, a fruit of seeking Him and using the day as He intends. It provides a break from the normal day-to-day activities—earning a living, caring for a home, raising families—so that we have unfettered time to pursue eternal and spiritual matters. These are truly refreshing and liberating, offering freedom from the weariness of spirit and the hopelessness imposed by the world. God, as our Deliverer and Liberator, grants hope through the Sabbath, allowing our spirits to soar with the promise of the future He has laid out. In fellowship with Him, we find the true rest and refreshment that the Sabbath is intended to provide week by week.
Sabbathkeeping (Part 2)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe Sabbath holds profound significance in the relationship God has invited us into, serving as a sign between Him and His people. It reminds us of our identity and that our God is the Creator, marking the Sabbath as a memorial to creation. It distinguishes and separates us from others, drawing attention to the state of our relationship with God when kept properly. Each Sabbath is a recurring appointment with the Deity, encapsulating the unique covenant relationship we share with Him. The central purpose of the Sabbath is not merely to rest from physical labor, though rest is a factor. Far more important is the development and building of our relationship with God. The break from normal routine provides time to know Him, which is essential for eternal life. The Sabbath is a weekly, and sometimes annual, appointment devoted to Him, ensuring the relationship is not lost amidst life's other activities. When observed correctly, it offers true spiritual rest and refreshment. God restores strength through the proper use of the Sabbath. He gives power to the faint and increases strength to those who have no might. When our relationship with Him is right, the Sabbath becomes a day to be re-energized, not primarily through physical rest, but through seeking Him. Power flows from His presence, renewing our strength so we may mount up with wings of eagles, run and not be weary, walk and not faint. A single day in His courts is better than a thousand elsewhere, for He is our Light and Protector, giving grace and glory, withholding no good thing from those who walk uprightly. Happy are those who are strong in the Lord, who desire above all to follow His steps. Even in rough times, through fellowship with Him on the Sabbath, valleys of weeping become places of springs and refreshment. Those who wait on the Lord grow constantly in strength, invited to meet with Him. He gives rest, putting the mind at ease, filling us with confidence to face trials and temptations, secure in the victory that comes from faithfully serving Him. True rest and refreshment come from this fellowship, liberating us to do things we cannot devote equal time to on other days.
