What Is the Church's Work Today (Part One)
Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe work of the church has been deeply affected by the shaking of foundations within the greater church of God, leading to confusion and a loss of faith among many. Over recent years, the church has faced significant challenges, with members scattering and fellowship being disrupted. This turmoil has forced a reconsideration of the church's primary focus and operations during such times of crisis. The work of God is fundamentally about creation, as He is the Creator, shaping mankind in His image. This creative process extends far beyond the initial preaching of the gospel to the world, which is only a small part of His operation. The more extensive and time-consuming work involves transforming individuals spiritually into His likeness, a process that requires patience and testing to build character and faith. The church's role in this divine work includes both preaching the gospel and feeding the flock. While preaching to the world may initiate faith, the deeper, ongoing work of nurturing and strengthening the faith of the converted is vital. This feeding of the flock, providing detailed and intense teaching, is essential for spiritual growth and maturity, preparing members for service to God. The operations of the church are not static but shift according to circumstances and God's direction. Just as different members have varied functions within the body of the church, the collective work of the church changes based on the needs of the time. In periods of scattering or persecution, the focus may turn from public proclamation to gathering and strengthening the sheep, addressing the causes of division to prevent further dispersal. God remains sovereign over the church's direction, guiding His people through changing circumstances as He did with the pillar of fire and cloud for the children of Israel. His work is to create His image in us, even through difficult times, testing our resolution and faith to restore what has been lost and to lead us according to His will.
What Is the Church's Work Today (Part Two)
Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe work of the church, as understood within the context of God's purpose, is not a static endeavor but one that adapts under His sovereign guidance. God's work is fundamentally about creation, including the creation of faith within us, so that we respond in trust. The church, likened to a human body with many parts, does not have all members performing the same function, yet all contribute to the whole under God's direction. Historically, the work of God's people has varied—Noah's role changed before and after the Flood, Abraham's differed from Isaac's, and Moses' purpose was distinct from Joshua's. Despite these differences, the overarching direction remains the successful culmination of God's purpose through humanity. At present, the church faces a critical condition, having been scattered and divided due to internal spiritual sickness, loss of first love, and self-concern. This implosion and subsequent explosion of the church stem from years of poor spiritual diet and neglectful application. The immediate work of the church must prioritize re-gathering the scattered sheep and addressing the root causes of this dispersion. This involves fixing broken foundations, whether they be spiritual attitudes, beliefs, or practices that led to the scattering. While preaching the gospel to the world remains a responsibility God entrusts to the church, it is not currently the highest priority. Instead, the focus must shift to internal healing and restoration, feeding the flock, and bringing members to holiness—a more challenging and time-consuming task. This shift in direction is necessitated by the conditions forced upon us by our environment and by what God desires to accomplish. God's sovereignty dictates the timing and nature of His work, as seen with the Israelites in the wilderness, where He determined their path and adjustments based on circumstances. The destruction of the church's foundations, particularly faith, has led to its current state of division. Faith is the substance that undergirds the spiritual structure of the church, and its erosion has caused significant damage. God's hand is evident in this scattering, as He is the Creator who leads and shapes His church, permitting trials to drive us back to Him. The church's work now is to respond to these trials with faith, turning to Him for strength, and amending our ways to align with His purpose. Only through such repentance and rebuilding can the church be prepared to once again fulfill its broader mission with an acceptable attitude before God.
