Redemption from death, like salvation, has past, present, and future aspects. In the past, Christ redeemed believers from the law's curse, the overarching penalty of which is death, by paying the ransom with His perfect life (Galatians 3:13; 4:4-5). The law itself is not a curse; it is a "law of liberty" showing how to stay free, but breaking it brings death along with other curses such as damaged relationships, poverty, and fear. This initial redemption parallels justification. In the present, believers who remain "in Him" continue to be redeemed through His blood from sin and its penalties (Ephesians 1:7), though those who practice lawlessness forfeit this. God wants most of all to redeem from every lawless deed (Titus 2:14). In the future, the "redemption of our body" (Romans 8:23) delivers believers from the flesh that carries the law of sin and death. Being redeemed from the death penalty does not by itself make anyone fit for immortal life, since flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom. At Christ's return, corruptible bodies are raised incorruptible and death is swallowed up in victory, freeing believers from the first and second death. The Holy Spirit is the down payment sealing believers until that day, but it can be grieved and quenched. Passover looks back to redemption and forward to its completion in the Kingdom.
