Enmity stands as the deep antagonism separating Israelites and Gentiles, arising from human nature's opposition to God's law and manifesting in the Israelites' prideful sense of superiority alongside the Gentiles' resentful feelings of inferiority and rejection. This hostility, rooted in God's own choices to reveal Himself more fully to the families of Jacob while withholding that revelation from others, created a built-in division that neither group could resolve on its own. Through Jesus Christ, who abolished the enmity in His flesh by means of the cross, both groups receive the opportunity to become one new man reconciled to God in a single body. Christ thereby slays the enmity and preaches peace to those far off and those near, establishing the commonality of faith, justification, and hope in the Kingdom that replaces former prejudices. The barrier dissolved is not the law itself but the attitude of hostility toward it and toward one another, an attitude that formal ceremony and self-righteousness had intensified among the Israelites while stirring envious hatred among the Gentiles. Each person must therefore repent of these attitudes, extend humble forgiveness, and make the sacrifice of compromise, allowing God to forgive former resentments and superiority so that unity with Him and with one another becomes reality. This resolution of enmity directly advances the broader call to oneness with the Father and the Son, a oneness made possible by grace yet requiring personal responsibility to overcome every remaining division.
