During the three seasons God summons us every year, He reminds us of what He has done, what He is doing presently, and what He is going to do. At this time of year, we are admonished to put the leavening of pride and arrogance out of our homes. Pride, the chief attribute of Satan the devil, is something we loathe in someone else, but tolerate in ourselves. The apostle John warns us to be wary of the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, all compatible with Satan's spirit. God uses trials to test us, but He never tempts us; we are tempted by our own carnal human nature. In John Bevere's book, The Bait of Satan, he warns that offenses are often used to trap people into feeling they have been unjustly treated, puffing themselves up to a retaliatory position, ignoring Christ's admonition to forgive and let God take care of the retaliation. The key to avoiding the bait of offense is to be subject to one another, clothing oneself with humility (I Peter 5:5).
