Evil Is Real (Part Five)

CGG Weekly by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

In the face of persistent evil, Jesus Christ demonstrated unwavering resistance during a grueling forty-day ordeal in the wilderness, under constant attack from satan. Despite physical weakness from fasting, He remained spiritually formidable as the powerful Son of God. Jesus bent all His will and strength to overcome each temptation, using deeply ingrained knowledge of Scripture as a razor-sharp weapon against satan's assaults. He was not passive but actively engaged, prepared by years of study and meditation, and sustained by regular prayer and fasting. Jesus never ignored evil or succumbed to the weaknesses of His flesh, resisting them with the strength of God's Spirit, though it was no easy task. His approach serves as a pattern for us: to face evil with the Word of God, commit to the Father's will, and repay evil with good. He did not return evil for evil, but instead performed self-sacrificial acts of goodness, even toward His revilers and persecutors, and for His brethren. Jesus went about doing good and healing those oppressed by the devil, never allowing evil to deter Him or change His course. This method of resistance, rooted in diligence and faith in God's guardianship, offers a way for us to overcome evil as He did.
