Truth (Part 4)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

God's Truth is symbolized by light, and fellowship with God requires walking in the light by responding to truth. God initiates the bridging of the chasm between Himself and mankind through truth from His Word, which is true. The Scriptures play a major role in the removal of deception and in drawing people to Christ, so that all shall be taught by God. People are introduced to truth by God through a mechanism that enables them to claim knowledge of God's Truth and fellowship with Him. The truth of God preached through the ministry reveals the Great God and leads hearers by the Spirit to accept Jesus Christ. Acceptance or rejection of the truth of God determines whether fellowship with God and others increases or decreases. The Holy Spirit enables people to put truth together so that they see not only the purpose but also the plan, and they yield to it in a way that allows them to live by faith. The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment by presenting arguments from the truth of God's Word until one admits errors and acknowledges the truth. The Holy Spirit also convicts that the absolute standard of righteousness for men is the life of Jesus Christ lived in the flesh. The true knowledge of God is central to life because that knowledge determines character, and character determines conduct, and conduct determines the quality of life.

Truth (Part 2)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

God's Truth is that to which Jesus bears witness as the very purpose of His coming, so that everyone who is of the truth hears His voice and responds by humbling himself before it. This response distinguishes the converted from the unconverted, for those who are of God hear God's words while those who are not of God refuse to believe even when confronted by the truth spoken directly to them. Yielding to truth proves difficult because it frequently cuts across existing beliefs and practices, exacting a personal cost that may divide families or require surrender of comfortable conduct and acceptance by others. When truth is suppressed or stuffed, the natural result is idolatry, beginning with the exchange of the evidence for a Creator God for a lie and progressing to the worship of self or other substitutes devised by human reasoning. This suppression activates the cause-and-effect operation of God's moral order, described as the wrath of God, in which He simply gives people over to the debased mind and the penalties their choices produce. Hebrew usage presents truth as firm, reliable, and unchanging, the solid foundation that sustains, while New Testament usage adds the sense of genuine reality in harmony with God's purpose, dynamic and at war with what is false. Human nature contains a persistent perversity that prefers the comfort of lies or familiar traditions to the discomfort of truth, a tendency reinforced by the cultures and philosophies absorbed from earliest life. Redemption therefore requires being delivered from such aimless conduct received by tradition so that truth may be continually acknowledged and applied. Without ongoing submission to newly revealed truth, no lasting character consistent with the mind of God is formed, and the inevitable outcome of continued rejection remains self-destruction.
