Truth (Part 2)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe converted and unconverted are distinguished by their response to truth. Jesus declared that everyone who is of the truth hears His voice, indicating not mere recognition but active submission that shapes conduct. Those of God hear His words and obey them, while those who are not of God refuse to believe even when confronted with clear evidence. Yielding to truth often proves costly, dividing families, requiring rejection of long-held practices such as Sunday observance or pagan holidays, and demanding that personal comfort or social acceptance be surrendered. Scripture shows that unconverted humanity suppresses the truth in unrighteousness. Although the evidence of a Creator is manifest, people exchange that truth for a lie, fashioning idols that ultimately become self-worship. When truth is continually stuffed, God gives men over to a debased mind, allowing the moral order of His laws to produce its inevitable penalties without divine intervention. The same tendency operates within the converted, where the law of sin and death works to preserve comfortable traditions and prejudices received from culture and upbringing. These inherited patterns render lives aimless and resistant to new truth. People prefer smooth messages that require no change and rationalize that consequences will not reach them. Redemption frees believers from such aimless conduct, yet the same self-deception must be continually confronted if truth is to become part of daily behavior. Only those who persistently acknowledge and apply revealed truth progress toward the character of Jesus Christ; those who refuse it remain unchanged and ultimately self-destroyed by the very laws they disregard.
