Grieving the Holy Spirit
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughThe Holy Spirit serves as a seal and a pledge from God, marking us as His children and guaranteeing our inheritance until the day of redemption. In Ephesians 1:13-14, it is shown that the Holy Spirit seals us as a down payment, an earnest of our salvation, ensuring that God will do all in His power to bring us to His Kingdom. This sealing is not a one-time event but continues throughout our Christian lives, setting us apart and aiding us in reaching the full measure of Christ. As a seal, the Holy Spirit identifies us as belonging to God, validating our origin and destination to those who recognize it, and stands as God's good faith pledge to fulfill His covenant promises. We, in turn, must uphold our part of the covenant, being careful not to grieve the Holy Spirit by our actions, as this could endanger our relationship with God. During the time we are sealed, we must refrain from actions that cause sorrow to God's Spirit, ensuring that we do not sully the bond we share with Him through His Spirit.
