Grieving the Holy Spirit

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

The Holy Spirit serves as a seal and an earnest payment of our inheritance, marking us as God's children and guaranteeing our redemption. In Ephesians 1:13-14, it is shown that the Holy Spirit seals us as a down payment, a pledge of God's good faith to bring us to His Kingdom. This sealing is not a one-time event but continues throughout our Christian lives, setting us apart and aiding us in reaching the fullness of Christ. We are reminded in Ephesians 4:30 not to grieve the Holy Spirit of God, during the time we are sealed for the day of redemption, emphasizing that our present conduct must honor this relationship. The Spirit identifies us as belonging to God, validates our origin, and assures us of our destination, as long as we do not endanger this bond by our actions. God's Spirit remains with us until we are changed at redemption, and we must be careful not to grieve it, as doing so could lead to severe consequences if persisted in.
