Sick and Tired
CGG Weekly by Richard T. RitenbaughSickness is part of the human condition. We are biological creatures that run down if we fail to provide our bodies with adequate nutrition, exercise, sleep, and other necessary requirements. Additionally, we sometimes engage in foolish or sinful actions that result in illness or disease. Humanity may have degenerated over time, and mankind has not aided itself with air and water pollution, junk food, and toxic chemicals in our surroundings. As God's children, we can call upon Him for healing. He is our Healer and promises to protect us from terrible diseases if we obey Him. During His ministry, Jesus healed everyone who asked according to their faith. We can conduct our lives confidently, knowing we can rely on God's protection. However, we should not be foolish, stupid, or careless in these matters, nor should we tempt God to force Him to act on our behalf. When we are sick and tired and in need of God's healing, we should ask ourselves what we have done to bring this condition upon us. Have we tempted God with our lifestyle? Has He withheld His protection so that we might learn a lesson and repent of a sin? If we have not been treating the temple of God's Holy Spirit properly, by overworking, eating poorly, skipping meals, overindulging, neglecting exercise, or carrying excess weight, then we need to make changes. The essence of repentance is change, and while God forgives and leads us to repentance by His grace and mercy, we must make the necessary changes ourselves to show Him we have learned our lesson and wish to live healthfully from then on.
Antibiotic Doomsday Scenario
Commentary by Martin G. CollinsThe World Health Organization (WHO) warns that the world may soon enter an era without effective drug treatments for many infections due to antibiotic resistance. This resistance, an increase in a bacterial strain's tolerance to antibiotics that once treated it effectively, is largely driven by the sheer volume of unnecessarily prescribed antibiotics. A significant portion of people mistakenly believe antibiotics are effective against viral infections like the common cold, which contributes to this misuse and fosters antimicrobial resistance, lowering future resistance to disease. Britain's Chief Medical Officer, Dame Sally Davies, has declared antibiotic resistance a greater threat than international terrorism, with dire consequences as bacteria become resistant to all antibiotics. Common infections like strep throat could progress to fatal pneumonia, and minor scratches to terminal blood poisoning. In hospitals, multi-drug combinations are increasingly needed to combat resistant bacteria, with notable threats like multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis causing hundreds of thousands of deaths annually worldwide, and MRSA (methicillin-resistant staph aureus) killing about 25,000 hospital patients yearly in the US. The WHO directs urgent alerts about antibiotic overuse to primary care physicians, urging them to avoid prescribing antibiotics for viral conditions that do not require or respond to such treatment, and to the agricultural industry, which uses broad-spectrum antibiotics in livestock, passing resistant bacteria to consumers. Physicians and farmers often justify their overuse, but the call remains clear to reduce unnecessary antibiotic distribution. The best prevention against antibiotic overuse is maintaining a healthful lifestyle to avoid needing antibiotics altogether. Infections often occur not due to particularly vicious bacteria, but because of a patient's vulnerability or host susceptibility, often exacerbated by self-neglect or conditions like obesity leading to diabetes, which increases infection susceptibility. Taking good care of oneself reduces the likelihood of becoming a susceptible host, thereby minimizing contribution to the doomsday scenario of antibiotic resistance.
'Never Events'
Commentary by Martin G. CollinsIn the context of health and well-being, Scripture often connects sickness with sin and foolishness, as seen in Psalm 31:9-10 and Psalm 38:3-8, where David laments the physical and spiritual toll of his iniquities, expressing how his strength fails and his bones waste away due to sin. However, the Bible also emphasizes physical welfare and the importance of praying for good health, as noted in III John 2, where the desire for prosperity and health is linked to the soul's well-being. The Eternal promises to remove sickness from His people if they worship and obey Him, as stated in Exodus 23:25-26, ensuring a life free from miscarriage or barrenness and a full number of days. In contrast to modern medical approaches, God's inspired Proverbs promote attitudes like fear of the Lord, wise and pleasant words, and a joyful heart as essential for good health. The proper response to sickness includes prayer and faith, both for the ill and the healthy, as advised in James 5:13-16, where calling for the elders to pray over the sick and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord is encouraged, with the assurance that the prayer of faith will save the sick and the Lord will raise them up. Scripture also indicates that those who do not seek God in sickness demonstrate a lack of faith, though seeking medical help is not discouraged, as Jesus Himself acknowledged the need for a physician for the sick in Luke 5:31. Wisdom in health decisions, especially when dealing with the medical profession, is urged in Proverbs 12:15, highlighting the value of heeding counsel.
