The Microbe is Nothing, the Terrain is Everything
Commentary by Bill OnisickGod promises that if His instructions are kept He will take away sickness and disease. Viruses can cause disease. Most new viruses enter the human population as a zoonosis. The terrain theory suggests that if the body is healthy and balanced then the many germs which are a natural part of the environment will be dealt with by the body without causing sickness. The immune system provides amazing protection against viruses and bacteria seeking to invade the body. Without daily movement and daily exercise the cell walls become compromised and more easily allow in foreign substances like viruses. Improper care of the bodies has both spiritual and physical ramifications. When the body's terrain becomes literally inhospitable to viruses sickness may still occur and require healing from the Creator.
Antibiotic Doomsday Scenario
Commentary by Martin G. CollinsDisease can progress to potentially life-threatening infections when antibiotic resistance occurs. Antibiotic resistance is an increase in the tolerance of a strain of bacteria against an antibiotic that usually treats it effectively. The sheer volume of antibiotics prescribed is the major factor in the increasing rates of bacterial resistance. A single dose of antibiotics leads to a greater risk of resistant organisms to that antibiotic in the person for up to a year. This misuse is approaching an antibiotic doomsday scenario made possible by the abuse, misuse or irrational use of drugs, particularly antibiotics. In the final moments of this scenario all bacteria become resistant to all antibiotics. Strep throat invariably progresses to fatal pneumonia. A minor scratch leads to terminal blood poisoning. Surgical incisions routinely infect despite all precautions. Multi-drug combinations are needed to deal with bacteria that have the ability to outsmart drugs. Worldwide the most resistant bacteria is tuberculosis for which many antibiotics must be administered simultaneously for successful treatment. Multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths every year. Methicillin-resistant staph aureus kills about 25,000 hospital patients a year. Vancomycin used to destroy methicillin-resistant staph aureus but vancomycin-resistant staph aureus emerged. The worst infections occur in patients who have compromised their immunity through years of self-neglect. An infection occurs not because a species of bacteria was particularly vicious but rather because the patient was especially vulnerable. Obesity can lead to diabetes and diabetics are more susceptible to infections than the rest of the population. In the treatment of disease the Hippocratic school attached great importance to diet. In chronic cases diet, exercise and natural methods were chiefly relied upon. Medical science has always been a strange mixture of truth and error. With all drugs the doctor who prescribes them knows he must balance the risks against advantages. Practitioners refer to their treatment of the human body as managing the pain, managing the cancer, managing the disease which is their admission that they cannot heal anyone. Generally doctors admit that no drug or medicine can heal. God is the only true Healer. Spiritually sin may be compared to sickness and forgiveness to having health restored. Jesus was that Physician. He comes to us in our need. He makes a perfect diagnosis. He provides a final and complete cure. He pays the bill.
