Dedication is a Necessity
Commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)Devoted dedication to a cause is a vital character quality for continuing service to God, requiring vision, understanding, courage, and humility. For Christians, this cause is God's cause, and Jesus admonishes us to prioritize representing Him above all else in life. The dedication of David's mighty men in I Chronicles 11:15-19 exemplifies this, as they risked their lives to fulfill David's longing for water from Bethlehem's well, demonstrating profound loyalty to their commander. Similarly, Jeremiah 35 highlights the Rechabites' dedication to a family principle, refusing wine despite temptation, showing unwavering loyalty to their ancestor's command for 200 years, which God used to contrast the Jews' lack of dedication to Him. In Luke 2, Simeon's dedication as a just and devout man allowed him to witness the Christ before his death, while Anna, at 84, dedicated her life to serving God with fasting and prayers at the temple. The guards at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery further illustrate dedication, adhering to strict rules and enduring harsh conditions like Hurricane Isabel in 2003, viewing their duty as the highest honor, unbroken since 1930. This raises the question of whether God asks too much of us to be dedicated to Him and His way.

Burn the Ships
Sermon by Ted E. BowlingDedication, as exemplified by the historical act of burning the ships, reflects a profound commitment to a cause with no possibility of retreat. Just as Hernando Cortes demonstrated total dedication by destroying his fleet, ensuring his men had only the option to conquer or die, so too must we exhibit unwavering dedication in our spiritual journey. This level of dedication is mirrored in the actions of Elisha, who, upon receiving the mantle of prophecy from Elijah, burned his plows and slaughtered his oxen, symbolically eliminating any chance of returning to his former life. His actions declared to all his complete dedication to serving God, choosing to go all in with no turning back. Dedication requires us to bind ourselves to a course of action, reflecting our character through self-discipline, resilience, and persistence, even when stepping out of our comfort zones. It is a decision to stand firm, to take one more step when we feel we cannot, and to support others regardless of difficulties. In our relationship with God, dedication is not optional but a requirement, demanding that following Christ comes before everything in our lives. As Jesus Christ exemplified ultimate dedication by sacrificing Himself, enduring unimaginable trials without wavering, we are called to emulate His example. His life and sacrifice set the standard for us, showing total dedication under the harshest circumstances. As we approach solemn observances, we must examine ourselves, searching our hearts and renewing our dedication to Christ. This renewal is symbolized in acts of humility, love, and service, binding us together in fellowship. Let us rededicate ourselves to walk as He walked, praying for a deeper understanding of His sacrifice and the reward that awaits us through total dedication. Just as there was an empty ocean behind Cortes' men, for us, turning back means spiritual death; thus, our dedication must be absolute, with no turning back.
