Cloak of Zeal
Sermonette by Bill OnisickZeal means to have an enthusiastic devotion to a cause, ideal, or goal, and tireless diligence in its furtherance. Synonyms for zealous include devout and devoted. Godly zeal is grounded on determination, conviction, aggressive dedication, and unrelenting action. It is being passionately committed to and always actively and eagerly working towards the achievement of a goal. This definition is also that of agape love. Agape is being passionately committed to and always actively working towards what is best for the God family. Agape and zeal are inextricably linked as two sides of the same coin, a fervent desire always accompanied by action. Christ redeemed a people to become zealous of good works. This broad admonition includes service to all men and especially to those of the household of faith. The Godly widow diligently followed every good work. A life of self-sacrifice means always actively working to give obedience, time, energy, goods, money, love, forbearance, and forgiveness so that in all things God is glorified and the Church is built up. The love of Christ constrains and transforms with agape love as the source and power of love to Him and to His people. His agape love, shed abroad in the hearts by the Holy Spirit, creates the burning zeal that grows, consumes, and overtakes. It builds the way of give until it is no longer able to be constrained by the prideful way of get. The Spirit erupts as zeal for good works for God and His people becomes the sole reason for living.
The Offerings of Leviticus (Part Two): The Burnt Offering
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughComplete devotion to God produces a life of complete holiness along with a supreme confidence and solid assurance of the Father's constant presence and approval. Sacrificial living in submission to God's will pleases Him because real worship is the offering of everyday life to Him. Loyal devotion given to please God in every labor of life is the most satisfying and acceptable response that can be given to God. The conditions for acceptance involve a life of sincere wholehearted and loyal devotion to God. The example of complete devotion to God's purpose has been set and must be followed. Jesus' devotion to the death in fulfilling God's will stands as the model. Following uncomplainingly forms a necessary part of being a whole burnt offering as expressed in the statement that it is not my will but Yours be done. The turtledove's imagery combines humility with sadness caused by the effects of sin and repentant sorrow. In the burnt offering Christ serves as both representative and example. Acceptance comes through representative acts consisting of a totally devoted and sinless life that paved the way for crucifixion and gave God satisfaction. Acceptance before God occurs with the same measure as if one were Christ. At the same time Christ serves as the example so that the same total devotion to the Father and His way may be followed.
The Offerings of Leviticus (Part Six): The Sin Offering
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughJesus' perfect offering of Himself for us fulfilled the sin offering of Leviticus 4. Our acceptance of His offering for atonement puts us under obligation.
The Offerings of Leviticus (Part Four): The Peace Offering
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughThe peace offering depicts the effect of perfect devotion to God and man through peaceful satisfaction and fellowship. This is the fruit of devotedly keeping the two great commandments of the law. The altar represents sacrificial services and devotion to God that give Him satisfaction and result in acceptance. Devoted people sacrifice for those they love. Sacrifice indicates devotion to God through the burnt offering and devotion in service to man through the meal offering. The peace offering represents the effect of devotion given directly to God and devotion to God given in service to man.
