How Do the Land Sabbath and Jubilee Years Work (Leviticus 25)?

Bible Questions & Answers

God declares that when you enter the land He gives you, the land shall keep a sabbath to the LORD. Every seventh year is to be a land Sabbath, during which no crops are to be sown or harvested. Any produce that grows by itself may be used for daily food by the farmer and the poor of the land. After seven cycles of sabbatical years, totaling 49 years, the fiftieth year is proclaimed a jubilee, during which the land again rests from cultivation, and families who have become poor and mortgaged their land may return to their possession. These economic laws are designed to prevent undue wealth from accumulating among the rich while the poor become further impoverished. God emphasizes that people must not oppress one another and promises blessings for following these laws, encouraging generosity and compassion. God's land Sabbath and jubilee aim to prevent hardhearted attitudes and the resulting economic curses. Man is to willingly forego his crop in the sabbatical year and jubilee by letting the land rest, acknowledging God as the true Owner of the land and being thankful for His generosity. He is to share the earth's bounty with the less fortunate. The rest from tilling the land also provides opportunities for education, travel, community service, and spiritual reflection. God promises a miracle of abundant crops in the sixth year of the cycle to sustain until a new crop can be harvested two or three years later, serving as a continuing witness of His power as Provider. Even where these laws cannot be practiced in the letter due to the constraints of the present system, they should be kept in the spirit. A farmer who owes money may not be able to rest all his land every seven years due to financial obligations, but it is suggested to rest the land in rotation so each field rests sometime during a seven-year period. If possible to rest the whole farm at once, that is preferable. God desires that we care for the soil, recognizing that we are merely tenants on His land, responsible for maintaining its fertility. Good soil conservation measures should be practiced, as God is concerned with how we manage the resources He entrusts to us.

Deuteronomy, Land Sabbaths, Atonement, and Third Tithe

Sermon by Ryan McClure

God has outlined a Sabbath and rest for the land, distinct from the weekly Sabbath that occurs on the seventh day of the week. This land Sabbath, as detailed in Leviticus 25:1-4, emphasizes that God created the earth and everything in it, and He cares deeply for His creation. In II Chronicles 36:19-21, it is shown that in punishing Israel, God ensured the land received the rest He required, which had been neglected due to disobedience in years past. Furthermore, every seven years, during the year of release, there is an opportunity to forgive not only physical debts but also spiritual debts, letting go of wrongs and hurts to start anew. This aligns with the broader purpose of these cycles, reflecting God's desire for renewal and care for His creation. The Jubilee year, the fiftieth year as described in Leviticus 25:8-17, is anchored on the Day of Atonement and marked by a trumpet sounding throughout the land, proclaiming liberty to all inhabitants. It expands on the seventh-year release by including a complete release of all debt and a return of land to original owners, requiring faith that God will provide sustenance during the 49th and 50th years when no sowing or reaping is allowed. God promises overflowing blessings in the sixth year to sustain His people for the following three years if they keep His commands, as seen in Leviticus 25:18. This year is declared holy, signifying its importance in observing God's plan for rest and restoration.
