The Trinity and the Holy Spirit (Part Two)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

The Holy Spirit is consistently described as the power of God, emanating from the Father and the Son to accomplish Their divine will. It is portrayed as an inanimate force, not a personality, evident in descriptions such as falling on individuals, being poured out, or rushing like a mighty wind, which are incompatible with a personal being. Scriptures reveal the Holy Spirit as the means through which God inserts Himself into creation, affecting events and circumstances anywhere at any time. It is the expression of the divine nature given to believers, enabling communion with God and creating them into the God kind. Notably, when the Father and the Son are mentioned together in apostolic writings, the Holy Spirit is absent as a personality, indicating it does not hold a place in the God family as a distinct being. Furthermore, the Holy Spirit is not involved in mediatorial roles or chains of command, reinforcing that it is not a personality but a power sent forth by the Father and the Son to call, convict, and lead believers. In various passages, it is likened to wind, water, or oil, emphasizing its invisible and inanimate nature, further distinguishing it from the personal characteristics of the Father and the Son.

Misconceptions and Malarkey About the Holy Spirit (Part One)

'Ready Answer' by David F. Maas

The Holy Spirit, as described in Ephesians 1:13-14, serves as the instrument of our regeneration as children of God and acts as a pledge or down payment on the life to come. Romans 8:9 emphasizes that without this spirit, which is the spirit and mind of Christ, displacing our carnal minds, we are not in the process of conversion and thus not candidates for the God Family. In Matthew 28:19, the baptismal formula suggests that people are baptized into the name of the Father and the Son by means of the Holy Spirit, indicating it as an essence rather than an entity. Furthermore, in the original Greek texts, the term for Holy Spirit, pneuma hagion, lacks an article, reinforcing the idea that it is a power rather than a personality.

The Holy Spirit

Bible Study by Martin G. Collins

The Holy Spirit, as the power of God, serves as a Comforter within us, imparting wisdom and understanding. It teaches His way of life, offering comfort and assistance in our daily walk. Even when we struggle to express ourselves in prayer, the Spirit aids us in presenting our requests before God. Through the Holy Spirit, He nurtures and shapes traits in His called-out children, producing the fruit of the Spirit, which reflects His character and demonstrates that we are maturing into the image of Christ.
