Faith and the Christian Fight (Part Nine)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

Jesus Christ stands as the central object of faith for those who persevere through trials and uncertainties. The heroes of faith in Hebrews 11, such as Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses, endured long and stressful periods of testing, sustained by their trust in a precious Being rather than mere doctrine. Their faith was rooted in the value of the One who spoke the promises, making His words as treasured as He is. They listened when He spoke, relied on His assurances, and embraced both Him and His promises with personal and possessive intimacy, allowing these to guide their lives through over a hundred years of conversion. Moses, for instance, esteemed the reproach of Christ more precious than the riches of Egypt, recognizing the worth of the One he dealt with, even though Christ's literal appearance was centuries away. This understanding was shared by others like Enoch, Noah, Abraham, and many more, who knew they were dealing with their Creator. Their faith in Him enabled them to overcome the busyness and stress of their times, serving as their staff and stay to persevere. This relationship with a living person, Jesus Christ, is vital. It is not merely about adhering to a body of beliefs, but about knowing Him deeply. Those who diligently seek Him, pray without ceasing, study His word, meditate on His importance, and submit to what they learn, are the ones who will endure. Their growing knowledge of Him magnifies His significance in their lives, influencing them to make right choices and live as strangers and pilgrims, separate from the world, with their citizenship and inheritance elsewhere.

Faith and the Christian Fight (Part One)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

Faith, as an essential element of Christian life, finds its primary object in Jesus Christ. In the context of spiritual warfare, faith is aimed at Him, indicating personal trust and confidence in Him as a person. This trust extends to confidence in what He accomplished, providing a means of justification and access to God. Faith in Jesus Christ becomes a part of one's thinking through hearing the Word of God, specifically His message and the gospel of the Kingdom of God. This faith is not merely a response to hearing the message but is a gift from God, given when one comes into contact with the gospel. It is through this gift of faith that salvation is received, emphasizing that it is God's action, not human effort, that initiates faith. Hearing, or more precisely listening, is crucial, as without thoughtful attention, faith will not be directed toward the right object, Jesus Christ, and will fail to produce the correct works. The ultimate chain of faith leads through Him to the Father, establishing Him as the central focus of the trust that saves.
