Ecclesiastes and Christian Living (Part Eight): Death
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughSatan is identified as a source of bondage through the fear of death, holding humanity in a spiritual slavery to sin. This fear, though not always a constant dread, subtly influences conduct with an underlying hopelessness due to disbelief in God's truths about death. Many are unaware of satan's existence or power, yet they remain in bondage to his deceptive lies regarding death, failing to connect their personal sins as the direct cause of death and satan as their spiritual father. According to Hebrews 2:14, satan possesses the power of death, a weapon used to maintain this bondage. However, this power is not absolute; satan can only execute it with God's permission, as seen in examples like Job, where God limits satan's actions. Despite this, satan's presence, along with his demons, creates an atmosphere of death and fear on earth. Through Christ's sinless life and substitutionary death, He defeated satan, stripping him of the weapon of death over those united with Christ. This victory frees believers from the curse of eternal death, breaking satan's hold and allowing them to turn voluntarily to God in obedience. While satan's power remains over the unconverted, who face both the first and second deaths unless converted, believers are no longer enslaved to him as their father and master, gaining liberty to obey God fully.
