Sermonette by James BeaubelleGod's called-out ones must curtail 'installment plan' serial sins which carry them to a fatal point of no return.
Murder?
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughIs abortion murder? Everybody agrees the taking of life and premeditation are involved. Abortion destroys the life of the unborn. Whether the person thinks the fetus is not a child does not alter the reality that another child will not be born. A life has ended, not an animal life, but the life of a human child with unlimited potential. God's laws not only require that we refrain from murder, but that we do all we can to protect life and promote its quality. He gives nations the right to execute those guilty of capital crimes, but He gives neither the state nor individual citizens the right to execute the unborn. Those lives are His. Judged by God's standard, abortion is murder regardless of the degree of guilt one might place. In the near future, God will severely punish America in measure for what they should know from His Word.
April Murder
CGG Weekly by Richard T. RitenbaughAll four of these mass killings—Waco, Oklahoma City, Columbine, and Virginia Tech—are acts of pure evil, manifesting in murder and mayhem. Each event, occurring within a narrow window of dates in April across different years, resulted in staggering casualty figures, from 39 dead and wounded at Columbine to nearly 1,000 affected by the Oklahoma City bombing. The killers, including the FBI in the Waco assault, justified their murderous actions with grievances, whether against government overreach, personal slights, or societal disdain. Despite these rationales, their deeds remain unjustifiable acts of homicide. The refusal to recognize the presence of evil within the human heart prevents the devising of real solutions to counter such violence, allowing murder to persist unchecked.
'But I Say to You' (Part Two): Murder and Anger
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughJesus addresses the law against murder, emphasizing that it extends far beyond the physical act. He teaches that the common understanding, which holds that murder is wrong and murderers must face judgment, is shallow and incomplete. He declares that murder begins long before the act, originating in the heart with anger, contempt, and belittling attitudes toward others. He asserts that even harboring anger or speaking derogatory words against a brother brings one under judgment, as the wages of sin, regardless of the act, is death. He further explains that the source of murder lies within the human core— the mind, attitudes, and emotions—producing defiling and violent acts. Jesus challenges the limited view of merely punishing the act after it occurs, as it does not change the heart or prevent further evil. Instead, He presents the law as a tool for redemption and righteousness, urging a transformation of the inner self to purge defilement and cultivate godly character. Jesus also advises reconciliation over harboring murderous attitudes. If a brother holds something against another, He instructs to resolve the issue before approaching God in worship, highlighting the interconnectedness of human relationships and one's relationship with God. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining unity within His Family, urging disciples to eliminate any spirit of murder that could affect their spiritual standing. Additionally, He provides guidance on preventing disputes that could escalate into deeper conflicts. He encourages quick agreement with an adversary to avoid greater crises, placing the responsibility on His followers to sacrifice personal gain or pride to preserve relationships. Jesus teaches that the law is a matter of the heart and mind, requiring His disciples to root out even the smallest inclination toward hatred or harm, striving for a righteousness that surpasses mere legalistic observance.
Abortion: The Land Is Full of Bloody Crimes
Article by John W. RitenbaughSatan deceives many into denying the humanity of the unborn, labeling it merely as an unviable tissue mass. Yet, God declares that what is in the mother's womb is indeed human, at an early stage of development, sustained by the environment it requires. An abortionist may refuse to call the termination of an embryo or fetus murder, but God's judgment stands firm. In His law, as recorded in Exodus 21:22-23, if men fight and cause a pregnant woman to give birth prematurely, and lasting harm such as death occurs to the unborn, the penalty is life for life. Even in cases of accidental miscarriage resulting in death, the judgment is manslaughter, subject to severe consequences. How much graver, then, is the judgment of murder when the unborn is deliberately targeted? From God's perspective, the willful killing of the unborn through abortion is undeniably murder.
The Sixth Commandment
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsGod forbids murder in the sixth commandment because He created all mankind in His image, and no one may end a human life unless God specifically commands it. Murder has been sin from the beginning, as Cain's curse shows, and God confirmed its penalty to Noah. Under the letter of the law, intentional killing was murder and was punishable by death on the testimony of multiple witnesses, while accidental killing was not murder, though the culprit had to stay in a city of refuge until the high priest died. Murder defiles the land and brings curses such as famine, drought, and disease. Life belongs to God, who gave it, so euthanasia and suicide are not permitted, and abortion is murder because the unborn child is a living human being known and cared for by God. Vengeance belongs to God alone, so Christians must not take it. They are to treat enemies with kindness and love, and they do not fight in the name of God, for those who live by violence will die by it. Murder begins in the heart, where Satan stirs up hatred and anger. Thought precedes action, so unjustified anger and hatred already break the sixth commandment. Satan was the first with the attitude of murder, and a murderer is his child who will not enter God's Kingdom.
Does Scripture Allow for Killing in Self-Defense?
'Ready Answer' by David C. GrabbeGod recognizes only two kinds of killing: accidental and intentional. Numbers 35 and Deuteronomy 19:5 define an accident as a death with no intent to harm and no awareness that the act would kill, such as an ax head slipping from its handle. Any killing with intent to kill or injure is murder, regardless of what the other person was threatening or doing (Exodus 21:12). Self-defense is not a category in God's law; the law of the land affords it. Firing a gun with foreknowledge that it can kill is murder. Jesus shows that murder begins in the heart and turns on intention (Matthew 5:21-22). Exodus 22:2-3 does not contradict this. A thief killed in the dark is presumed to have been struck without premeditation, because the homeowner cannot judge what force is needed against an unseen intruder. Killing a thief in daylight, when nothing hinders judgment, is intentional and therefore murder. The sixth commandment cannot be suspended when life is threatened, any more than the other nine. Whoever kills intentionally acts as judge, jury, and executioner, presumes an authority God has not granted, and values his own life above another sinner's. This puts self above God. Faith trusts God to protect according to His will, even if He allows suffering.
