The Ministry

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by John O. Reid

The ministry in the Church of the Great God encounters complaints from some members regarding secrecy about topics such as the processing of white sugar and a study on Zion National Park as a possible place of safety, failure to announce departures of individuals, efforts to form an elite group above the membership, and misappropriation of funds. Additional criticisms target individual elders for being too soft-spoken, overly reliant on notes, too direct in delivery, too young for certain subjects, or living in distant locations. These issues arise amid broader murmuring and distrust that can spread within the congregation and create an environment favorable to Satan rather than to God. Scripture instructs members to do all things without murmuring and disputing so that they may remain blameless. God places elders in the body according to His will and equips them with differing gifts for the profit of all, including teaching, exhortation, and leadership. Ministers function as fellow workers for the joy of the brethren, though they must sometimes correct and they share the same human weaknesses and need for forgiveness as others. Support for the ministry requires verifying rumors directly with the leadership, keeping unconfirmed reports to oneself, praying daily for protection from the adversary, and exercising caution regarding sources of information. When questions arise from a sermon, members should first study the Scriptures as the Bereans did, then approach the speaker calmly with prepared material if clarification is still needed. Such conduct preserves unity in the bond of peace, reflects the mind of God, and prevents Satan from scattering the flock through distraction or loss of confidence in those whom He has appointed.
