Running God's Marathon With Christ
Sermon by Mark SchindlerJesus Christ prepared for His ministry by submitting to baptism to fulfill all righteousness, after which the Spirit led Him into the wilderness for forty days of continuous temptation by Satan amid deprivation and danger. Throughout these trials, which included enticements to satisfy physical hunger by misusing divine power, to test God through presumptuous action, and to gain worldly kingdoms by worshiping the adversary, He consistently responded by declaring the written Word of God and refusing to depart from the Father's will. These experiences perfected Him as the captain of salvation, enabling Him to learn obedience through suffering and to become a High Priest who sympathizes with every human weakness while remaining without sin. Having run the full course of temptation and opposition without deviation, He now sets the pace for believers and drafts them through the narrowing pressures of their own spiritual marathon. By maintaining union with Him, they receive strength to resist the same patterns of attack—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—while holding fast the word of life without complaint. This victory through Jesus Christ leads directly to the promises given to overcomers: access to the tree of life, protection from the second death, hidden manna and a new name, authority over the nations, white garments and retention in the book of life, a permanent place as a pillar in the temple of God, and the right to sit with Him on His throne.
