A Name's Significance

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

In Revelation 3:12 Christ promises that the one who overcomes will receive the name of God, the name of the city of God which is New Jerusalem, and Christ's new name. Every person who is part of God's elect and the bride of Christ in the first resurrection will receive Christ's new name. Christ will share with each member of His bride His sterling character, spotless reputation, and almighty power by sharing His new name with them. This is a great and awesome honor that God gives because He loves and has accepted His people. His name has already been placed on His followers through baptism into the name of Jesus Christ. That name identifies them with Christ, His character, His church, and His Kingdom. The name ties them down with great responsibility yet also brings God's favor, grace, and Spirit so they may reflect that name. The name constrains them to bear it with honor, loyalty, and loving obedience. With that awesome name upon them they are bound by covenant to uphold it and emulate everything it represents. Possessing the name of Christ lifts them up.
